A two-week back-up into the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) looks likely for the progressive Jacquinot who was enormous coming wide to deny the filly In Secret victory in an exciting 2022 Golden Rose Stakes result in Sydney.

The Victorian raider from the stables of Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr was given a gutsy and perfectly-timed ride by jockey Damian Lane who plotted his own course on a track that had not favoured any backmarkers all day.

“It’s fantastic. What a win! They don’t normally do that,” co-trainer Kent Jnr. told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“The speed was on and the kept flowing. The horse broke well and got into a winning position

“He won well.”

Allowing the horse to settle well in a winning position after the jump, Lane came wide the final furlong to flash home over the top of the defeated James Cummings-trained favourite, Run To The Rose winning filly In Secret, who was brave in second.

In a photo for third, In Secret’s stablemate Golden Mile was nudged out into fourth as the John O’Shea-trained pacemaker Zou Tiger held on off his big on speed run throughout as a 50/1 outsider in the field.

The Golden Rose result saw Rubick colt Jacquinot, third in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes back home in the autumn, go back-to-back this preparation following his first-up win in the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 27.

“He was awesome first-up and a real set play by Mick and the team to come here second-up,” Kent Jnr said.

That looks the form race of the season for the three-year-olds with the runner-up, Aft Cabin, dominating the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude by over three lengths last weekend.

The McNeil Stakes third placed Tijuana further franked the form with his half-length Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) win at The Valley under the lights on Moir Stakes Night.

Jacquinot’s Golden Rose victory was the sixth Group 1 win for Price & Kent Jnr team, and Lane’s 25^th career Group 1 winning ride.

Having savaged the line so well over the 1400m second-up, it looks all systems go for the Golden Rose winner to head back south for a shot at the 2022 Caulfield Guineas on October 8.

“The plan before today was to go two weeks into the Caulfield Guienas,” he said.

“We ticked the Group 1 box so we’ll just see if that’s the right thing for the horse and we’ll have a look.”

Ole Kirk (2020) was the last horse to complete the Golden Rose – Caulfield Guineas double.
