2022 Spirit Of Boom Classic Results: JJ Atkins Target for Swiss Exile

Annabel Neasham continued her good run with juveniles taking out the 2022 Spirit Of Boom Classic results in the wet at Eagle Farm with emerging two-year-old Swiss Exile.

Jockey Sam Clipperton, in Brisbane for the Group 1 Doomben 10,000 ride on favourite Mazu, enjoyed a bonus win early on the card riding progressive colt Swiss Exile for an all-the-way win in the Group 2 $250,000 Spirit Of Boom Classic (1200m).

The result also saw Swiss Exile’s sire, Pariah, get his first stakes winner in the form of the $95,000 buy.

Breaking through for his maiden win at start number five, Swiss Exile presented fit second-up after finishing second as the beaten odds-on favourite at the Sunshine Coast on a Heavy (9) track back on April 29.

Coming back from 59kg that run to 57kg at set weights, he appreciated firmer going on a Soft (6) posting a deserving first turf triumph.

A consistent two-year-old, Swiss Exile had been close in similar company on a number of other occasions including his third on debut last December in the Listed Phelan Ready (1000m).

Third again at Doomben in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes (1200m) gun filly Coolangatta on Box Day, he atoned in his third Black-Type start on Doomben 10,000 Day.

After Exo Lady flew from the barriers to hit the early lead, Clipperton was quick to take Swiss Exile forward and lead the field around.

It was a messily run race behind them, but nothing bothered the front-runners with Swiss Exile leading from barrier to box.

Knuckling down on the straight, the eventual winner answered the challenge set by eventual runner-up Exo Lady, Desleigh Forster’s last start Dalrello Stakes winning Exosphere filly was brave on pace holding for second.

In an eye-catching third up the inside in a photo was the Chris Waller-trained So You Think colt Political Debate running well the closing stages in a nice trial ahead of next month’s Group 1 $1 million J.J. Atkins (1600m) over the mile on June 11.

Crossing the line in a dead-heat for third was Thelwell.

That Stradbroke Handicap Day support act back at Eagle Farm could also be on the winter agenda for Swiss Exile looking to be the first to complete the Spirit Of Boom Classic – JJ Atkins double since Rothfire (2020).

Updated all-in JJ Atkins 2022 odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au on Swiss Exile have firmed in from $67 into $17 and are available in full here.

Political Debate meanwhile has firmed into the new JJ Atkins favourite now paying $7 after his performance in the Spirit Of Boom Classic.
