2020 Inglis 3YO Guineas Field & Betting: Masked Crusader Odds-On Favourite

Despite being on the quick seven-day back-up, the talented Hawkes Racing-trained Masked Crusader is the dominant odds-on favourite in Inglis 3YO Guineas 2020 betting for this weekend at Rosehill Gardens.

A key feature on the program that also features the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic moved from its traditional home at Scone Racecourse, this season’s $200,000 Restricted Listed Inglis 3YO Guineas (1400m) field is down to just six runners.

There were originally seven final acceptors before the early scratching of the Toby & Trent Edmonds-trained Baroda (2), with the heavily-supported favourite moving into gate five.

Jockey Tommy Berry retains the ride on the in-form Toronado gelding who chases a fourth win on the trot, the latest being a three-length romp home over 1200m at Randwick just last weekend in a Benchmark 78.

Masked Crusader is now at a short $1.80 in the Inglis 3YO Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au to continue the winning streak on the quick turnaround back against his own age for last year’s winning trainer / jockey combo who saluted with Wild Planet.

“He’s not surprising us with what he’s showing but he’s still got to do it. He’s still a baby,” co-trainer Michael Hawkes told AAP this week.

“He took on the older horses and flogged them last start, now he’s back to his own age and weight but there’s a couple of smart ones in there.”

Occupying the second line of Inglis 3YO Guineas betting this season is the early market mover Dawn Passage ($3.70 into $3) who will jump from gate three with Adam Hyeronimus in the saddle once more.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Dawn Approach colt is also a last start winner having posted his third career win at the Rosehill track on ANZAC Day with a 2.80 length victory in the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m).

With the same hoop, a smaller field of rivals and coming back a half-kilo in weight to 56.5kg on the weekend, Dawn Passage shapes up as a huge chance to end the winning streak of the odds-on fancy in the Inglis Guineas with rival trainer Hawkes quick to name him as the danger.

“Dawn Passage is coming back to the same scenario, he’s coming from Group level back,” Hawkes added.

“But he [Masked Crusader] hasn’t put his foot wrong since his Wyong debut and he’s going in the right direction.”

The best of the rest in a predicted two-horse race to the line include Gerald Ryan’s value runner on the ease in betting Bandersnatch ($9) and the John O’Shea-trained Rocha Clock ($6.50) to be ridden by big race specialist Glen Boss.

The shortest-priced of the fillies in the mix, Rocha Clock is a well-bred daughter of gun sire Pierro and has been the picture of consistency to date with four wins and a second from six starts.

She has her first Rosehill assignment on Saturday on the back of an eye-catching win over 1300m at Randwick’s Kensington track last weekend in a Benchmark 78 for fillies and mares where she overcame gate 11 (of 12) carrying 57.5kg.

Fit and firing, Rocha Clock will be flying dropping back to 54.5kg against her own age here and has genuine winning claims.
