Kenedna to Dominate Doomben’s Queensland Oaks 2017

Victoria’s Darren Weir believes the move from Eagle Farm to Doomben Racecourse will only increase the chances of his The Roses winning filly Kenedna dominating the 2017 Queensland Oaks results this weekend in Brisbane.

With the Eagle Farm track badly affected by recent wet weather in the sunshine state, the call has been made to move Saturday’s Queensland Oaks meeting and the following weekend’s Stradbroke Handicap Day program to Doomben.

The move has caused plenty of controversy, especially with the distance of the $500,000 Group 1 Treasury Brisbane Queensland Oaks decreased from 2400m to 2200m to accommodate the alternate venue.

One trainer that is far from complaining is Weir who believes the changes will work perfectly to the advantage of his Queensland Oaks contender Kenedna.

A winner of three of her past four starts, the three-year-old daughter of Not A Single Doubt was last seen saluting in the traditional lead-up with a narrow victory in the Group 2 The Roses (2000m) on a Heavy (8) Doomben track on May 20.

The Roses has produced four of the past six Queensland Oaks winners with the last to do the double Kenedna shoots for this Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival being Scarlett Lady (2011).

Kenedna is after The Roses – Queensland Oaks double last completed by Scarlett Lady in 2011

Prior to her Doomben success, Kenedna was in Adelaide for a three race autumn raid that produced back-to-back wins before a narrow second in the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2010m).

Chris Waller’s Schweppes Oaks winner Egg Tart goes straight into the Queensland Oaks field without another run but remains the pre-field favourite to win again at $3.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

The Schweppes Oaks third placegetter Ana Royale is the next best fancied in the futures Queensland Oaks odds at $4.40 after she backed-up to win the Group 3 SA Fillies Classic (2500m).

Kenedna then could represent the value in Queensland Oaks betting this year at $4.80 before Wednesday’s final acceptances.

Weir is hoping she can turn the tables on Egg Tart boasting the fitness edge and now the previous experience at the Doomben track.

“It probably helps her I would say because she’s won there and instead of it being 2400m, it’s 2200m which is not a massive step,” Weir told Racing Victoria on Tuesday.

Jockey John Allen retains the ride on Kenedna in the Group 1 and Weir does harbour some concerns after the hoop’s far from encouraging post-The Roses feedback about how the filly handled the Heavy Doomben track.

“The only little concern I would have is that Johnny said that she never really handled the track at all the other day, even though she won,” Weir admitted.

“But providing it’s not too wet I’m looking at it as a plus for her.”

Weir said the move to 2200m would however be a notable disadvantage for his other Queensland Oaks hope Parthesia, a current $16 shot for the title.

“[It’s] probably a negative for our other filly Parthesia who is going up there,” he said.

“For Parthesia, the testing ground and the 2400m at Eagle Farm would’ve been ideal for her to try and run a place.”

The perennial placegetter comes off three runs in the money, but hasn’t enjoyed a turf triumph since the daughter of Raise The Flag saluted in the Listed Tasmanian Oaks (2100m) back in February.

Two back she was runner-up to Dornier at Flemington in the Listed VRC St Leger (2800m) in the wet on ANZAC Day before her second to Ana Royale when three lengths beaten at Morphettville on May 20.
