Having consistently performed against elite company throughout his career, the five-year-old son of Harry Angel was rewarded for his perseverance, producing a powerful finishing burst under Ben Melham in the Group 1 $1 million Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on Underwood Stakes Day to defeat last year’s winner Sepals ($11) by three-quarters of a length, while Regal Award ($9.50) fought on bravely for third.

Starting at $5, Angel Capital relished the strong tempo set up front before Melham angled the gelding into clear running approaching the turn, allowing him to unleash the acceleration that has so often seen him competitive at the highest level.

The victory pushed his career earnings beyond $2.8 million and added a maiden Group 1 trophy to a record that already featured placings in the William Reid Stakes, C.F. Orr Stakes, and Newmarket Handicap.

Speaking on behalf of the Waller stable, assistant trainer Darren Beadman said the result was richly deserved after a series of luckless Group 1 defeats.

“It’s been a really big day for the stable and I have to give a lot of thanks to Lizzie and all the staff down here. They’ve done a fantastic job with him,” Beadman added.

Few riders know Angel Capital better than Melham, who has partnered the horse throughout much of his career and has long maintained the gelding possessed Group 1 ability.

After the win, Melham admitted he arrived at Caulfield confident everything had fallen into place for the horse.

“Finally. We’ve praised this horse’s ability from day one,” Melham said.

“I just knew today was the first time he’d been in a suitable race where I thought everything would go to plan under the right conditions.”

The leading jockey said the horse’s ability has never been in question.

“The ability’s never been the question with him. He’s a very good horse, but he’s just so big and such a brute. He’s not an easy horse to ride,” he said.

“When things go his way, you’ve seen what he can do.”

Melham also paid tribute to the horse’s maturity and the work behind the scenes that allowed him to perform at his peak on race day.

“He’s come a long way. He’s raced against the best company all the time and he’s been stiff not to have won a Group 1 up until now.”
