While Sydney hosts the $20 million The Everest with Hong Kong hero Ka Ying Rising back down under chasing back-to-back wins in the world’s richest turf race, the attention in Melbourne turns to a fascinating edition of the Group 1 $6.54 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) this Saturday.

The opening leg of the coveted Spring Cups double has attracted a capacity field featuring reigning champion Half Yours, in-form Turnbull Stakes winner Cosmic Crusader sitting to of the latest Caulfield Cup odds at Ladbrokes, and a talented team of Northern Hemisphere raiders looking to spoil the locals’ party.

Defending champ Half Yours faces a tougher assignment this year under 57.5kg as he chases a rare second Caulfield Cup victory and at a current quote of $11 to do so.

The ever-powerful Ciaron Maher stable is also strongly represented through leading hopes Zahrann, Saint George, and Royal Supremacy, while international visitors Wine Dark Sea, Enfjaar, and Starford add further intrigue to the staying feature.

With proven Group 1 performers, rising staying talents, and genuine betting value throughout the field, the 2026 Caulfield Cup shapes as one of the most competitive editions in recent memory when it runs as Race 9 at 5:15pm (AEDT) as the penultimate event on Caulfield Cup Day.

Caulfield Cup 2026 Best Bets

Favourite: No. 2 Cosmic Crusader

Cosmic Crusader (17) gets the nod as the horse to beat in the 2026 Caulfield Cup, arriving at the race off one of the standout lead-up performances of the spring. The former Western Australian galloper has thrived since joining the Andrea Leek stable in Victoria, putting together an impressive preparation highlighted by victories in the PB Lawrence Stakes and a dominant Group 1 Turnbull Stakes success at Flemington.

The Maurice gelding announced himself as a genuine Caulfield Cup contender when powering away from a high-quality field in the Turnbull, carrying 58kg and defeating several of Australia’s best middle-distance horses by 1.75 lengths. It was a performance that suggested he has reached a new level this campaign.

The obvious question mark is the rise to 2400m for the first time, but there was plenty to like about the way he charged through the line over 2000m at Flemington. On that effort, the extra distance appears more likely to suit than hinder.

Barrier 17 is far from ideal, but the booking of William Pike is a significant positive and the 56kg impost gives him every opportunity to be competitive. If Pike can secure cover from the draw and produce him at the right time, Cosmic Crusader has the acceleration to put a gap in this field.

With proven Group 1 form, a manageable weight and a profile suggesting he is peaking on the right day, Cosmic Crusader looks capable of becoming the first horse since Incentivise in 2021 to complete the Turnbull Stakes-Caulfield Cup double.

Most recently won by 1.75 len in the G1 Turnbull Stakes at Flemington on October 3 over 2000m in the wet defeating Light Infantry Man with 58kg at $8. Before that made some head-way from midfield; 2nd of 8 in the G1 Underwood Stakes at this track on September 19 over 1800m, 1.75 len behind Birdman carrying 59kg at $2.25. Lovely profile through top races, if he stays the trip he just about wins.

Each Way Danger: No. 10 Wine Dark Sea

The value runner in this year’s Caulfield Cup looks to be British raider WINE DARK SEA (19), who arrives in Australia with an outstanding staying profile and the credentials to make a serious impact in his first start down under.

Prepared by Harry Charlton, the son of Sea The Stars has won three of his past four starts in Europe, including a tough victory in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury where he carried 61kg and defeated a quality field over further than Saturday’s 2400m assignment. His form at a mile-and-a-half and beyond is particularly strong, giving him an edge over several rivals who still have queries to answer at the trip.

The barrier draw has made life more difficult after he came up with gate 19, but few riders are better equipped to navigate a big-race challenge than Damian Lane, who famously guided international visitor Mer De Glace to Caulfield Cup glory in 2019.

Wine Dark Sea has reportedly been aimed at the Melbourne Cup, but that only enhances confidence in his staying credentials. European horses with proven form over distance have an excellent record in Australia’s feature handicaps, and this gelding profiles as the type capable of measuring up immediately.

If Lane can secure cover from the wide alley and have him within striking distance approaching the home turn, Wine Dark Sea possesses the toughness and stamina to be strong through the line. At attractive odds, he appeals as one of the better each-way plays in the field and a genuine threat to the local hopes.

Best Roughie: No. 4 Kingswood

For punters chasing a value runner capable of shaking up the exotics, KINGSWOOD (20) deserves plenty of respect at big odds in this year’s Caulfield Cup.

The British-bred son of Roaring Lion has been flying under the radar this spring, but his recent form stacks up better than it appears on paper. He has finished fourth in both the Group 1 Underwood Stakes and Group 1 Might And Power at Caulfield, staying on well in each run and never beaten far by quality opposition.

The step up to 2400m looks tailor-made for the seven-year-old, who has been doing his best work through the line in his lead-up runs. The quick back-up from last weekend’s Might And Power effort also looks a positive rather than a concern, with the gelding racing fit, hard and consistently.

A wide alley means he’ll need a touch of luck in running, but a genuinely run Caulfield Cup should suit his racing pattern. If the leaders overdo it up front, Kingswood profiles as one of the horses most likely to be charging home late when the pressure goes on.

At longer odds, he’s not without upset claims and looks a smart inclusion in Caulfield Cup trifectas, first fours and wider exotic bets, especially if the race develops into a true staying test.
