The 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes moves back to its traditional home on Underwood Stakes Day at Caulfield on Saturday to again serve as a key Toorak Handicap lead-up, and punters are faced with a tight betting market for the handicap clash.

The event has been won by many of the greats over the years including Stratum Star (2015), Moment Of Change (2012), Exceed And Excel (2003), dual champ Testa Rossa (1999 & 2000), and Encosta De Lago (1996).

This year the next generation of middle-distance sprinters will face off including narrow top fancy in Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes betting at $4 through Ladbrokes.com.auAngel Capital.

Chris Waller‘s up-and-coming four-year-old chases a hat-trick having won the Group 2 Autumn Stakes at this track and trip back in February before kicking off his spring campaign with a powerhouse 3.75 length demolition job in The Valley’s Listed Chautauqua Stakes (1200m).

Two-from-three at the Caulfield track he looks set to improve with that run behind him and should relish the step up to 1400m at this stage of his preparation as Waller chases his first win in the event.

Angel Capital gets in on a great weight of just 53.5kg, down from 56kg last start, but has drawn wide in gate 13 with Damian Lane retaining the ride.

The danger following closely in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes odds $4.20 is the also widely drawn Sepals out in gate 16 for Mornington trainer Cliff Brown.

The Calyx gelding also comes off a winning four-year-old debut when putting an impressive 4.25 lengths on his closest rival, Home Rule, here over the 1400m fresh on August 30 in a Benchmark 100 event.

Winner of the Group 3 CS Hayes by an equally large margin as a three-year-old in the autumn, Sepals showed his elite level potential when fourth to Feroce at HQ in the Group 1 Australian Guineas and should have no issues keeping up with this field.

Sepals will come into barrier 15 should the sole emergency, Zou Sensation (4), fail to gain a start.

The last horse to win from barrier 15 was Stratum Star back in 2015.

Craig Williams has won the Sir Rupert seven times in the past 20 years and partners Sepals this weekend!

Jockey Craig Williams has ridden seven Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes winners in the past 20 years and comes aboard the very lightly weighted Sepals (52kg) this weekend looking to add to his commanding record in the event.

One of the more seasoned performers in the mix is Another Wil for Ciaron Maher who won back in 2016 with Bon Arum.

The six-year-old son of Street Boss has a terrific 1400m record (8:5-2-0) and is something of a Caulfield specialist having won four of his seven starts at the course including beating Mr Brightside home in this year’s Group 1 CF Orr Stakes.

Mr Brightside was the talk of the town last weekend when the evergreen eight-year-old improved on his Memsie Stakes second to beat a small but elite field home in a huge all-the-way Makybe Diva Stakes victory leaving the likes of Aeliana and Ladbrokes Cox Plate queen Via Sistina in his wake.

That bodes very well for Another Wil heading into the Sir Rupert as he too ran in the Memsie Stakes finishing sixth.

Despite giving the weight away as the 59kg top weight, Another Wil is being kept safe in the markets at $6.50 drawn barrier seven with Jamie Melham riding.

The rails drawn Arkansaw Kid for Ben, Will & JD Hayes rounds out the single figure fancies at $7.50 chasing two wins on the trot after a lead-up victory in Flemington’s Group 2 Bobbie Lewis Quality down the straight last Saturday.

On the quick back-up for the first time, the airborne Harry Angel five-year-old presents rock-hard fit fourth-up and looks deserving of his shot at the Group 1 with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

The 2025 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes is set to run as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:20pm (AEST) as the second of the day’s two Group 1s in Melbourne on Saturday.
