Fangirl has officially been withdrawn from today’s Group 1 $1 million Winx Stakes (1400m) with the season’s opening elite level to be run at Royal Randwick on a Heavy (10) track.
The Australian Turf Club (ATC) confirmed this morning that racing at Randwick would proceed today despite concerns throughout the week the meeting would be a washout.

Despite the heavy conditions, Racing NSW Stewards and Australian Turf Club officials have deemed the track safe for racing following inspections on Friday and again this morning.
Randwick has endured a punishing wet spell, with 180mm of rain recorded the past 7 days, including 76mm in just two days. However, forecasts for improving weather heading into race day proved true.
Group 1 racing returns in Randwick Race 8 at 3:50pm (AEST) with the weight-for-age Winx Stakes.
The Winx Stakes field is down to 11 with the event’s 2023 winner Fangirl withdrawn by Chris Waller due to the track conditions.
Waller has four remaining runners including defending champion Via Sistina with the returning Ladbrokes Cox Plate champion heading the Winx Stakes odds at $2.20 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
She kicks off her campaign from barrier 1 with James McDonald to ride and is out to go back-to-back in the event for the first time since the stable’s three-peat with the great Winx (2016-18).
The first event of the day is scheduled at 11:40am (AEST) with racing to continue through until Race 10 at 5:05pm (AEST).
The opening Group status race on the card is the Group 3 $250,000 Premier’s Cup (2000m) – Race 5 at 2:00pm (AEST) – where Waller’s last start Prelude winner Saltcoats is the odds-on favourite.
Race 6 at 2:35pm (AEST) sees the Flight Stakes bound fillies face off in the Group 2 $300,000 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) and the undefeated Agarwood at $2.60 leads the markets from the Waterhouse/Bott yard.
Race 7 at 3:15pm (AEST), the Group 3 $250,000 Toy Show Quality (1100m), has a reduced field of eight fillies and mares following a host of withdrawals and sees the highly anticipated return of Waller’s unbeaten daughter of The Autumn Sun, Autumn Glow, who is very short at $1.55 and firming in the markets to win her four-year-old debut.
Race 9 at 4:30pm (AEST) continues the high stakes action after the Winx Stakes is run and won with the Group 3 $250,000 Show County Quality (1200m) field down to eight starts including the firm favourite General Salute racing second-up and seeing a Heavy rated track for the first time.
