The weather in Melbourne is currently fine, but with around a 50% chance of rainfall from about 7:00pm tonight there could be a downgrade to the current Good (4) Moonee Valley track rating.
Moonee Valley racing gets underway tonight at 5:15pm (AEST) and the eight-race card continues through until the Group 2 $300,000 Ladbrokes Stocks Stakes (1600m) at 8:45pm (AEST).
The 2021 Stocks Stakes field is down to a dozen mares following the withdrawal of #3 Don’ttelltheboss (10) and markets at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au are led by narrowly led by the autumn’s Group 1 Queen Of The Turf third placegetter Quantum Mechanic.
The first of the Group races on the program is the Group 2 $300,000 Stutt Stakes (Race 3 at 6:15pm) where just eight three-year-olds remain in the mile showdown after the scratching of the John Sadler-trained Adele Amour (9).
Current favourite in Stutt Stakes betting is the consistent Sandy Prince for Lindsay Park to be ridden by Craig Williams from barrier two.
Next-up in Race 4 it is the three-year-old fillies’ turn in the Group 3 $200,000 Scarborough Stakes (1200m) at 6:45pm with all 11 original acceptors still in the mix including the Godolphin-raced favourite Larkspur Run coming off a Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes second at the track/distance.
A potential Ladbrokes Cox Plate lead-up takes place in Race 6 tonight with the running of the Group 3 $200,000 JRA Cup (2040m) at 7:45pm where Mornington Cup winner Mount Popa (11) is a notable withdrawal.
Updated JRA Cup 2021 odds on the remaining 12 hopefuls have Shocking seven-year-old Defibrillate on top, the galloper boasting an excellent record at the distance (4:3-0-0).
Of course the event all the punters are waiting for is the Group 1 $1 million Moir Stakes (1000m) with a field of potential $15 million The Everest hopefuls facing off at 8:15pm in Race 7.
The 2021 Moir Stakes field still has the 11 final acceptors and markets are led by returning colt Profiteer with the weight advantage on 52kg, McEwen Stakes winner The Inferno and Concorde Stakes runner-up Wild Ruler for Peter & Paul Snowden.
