Trekking remains the firming favourite in Winterbottom Stakes 2020 betting for Perth’s latest Group 1 on Saturday despite the Godolphin galloper drawing out wide with barrier 11.
Fourth as the beaten favourite behind Hey Doc in the race last year, James Cummings’ subsequent Group 1 The Goodwood champion in Adelaide is after atonement in the Group 1 $1 million Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) this weekend at Ascot Racecourse.
Super hoop William Pike can do no wrong this season backing-up from his impressive raid on the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with a big win in last weekend’s Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stakes.
The master of weaving his way through a field, Pike pairs with Trekking in the Winterbottom replacing John Allen in the saddle of the $5 million earner.
Pike has ridden two Winterbottom Stakes winners since 2003 partnering Ellicorsam (2004) and most recently Hadabeclorka (2010) for their victories.
Updated Winterbottom Stakes odds online through Ladbrokes.com.au list Trekking at $2.05 to salute in his first run since a Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) second at The Valley in late October.
The six-year-old son of Street Cry is hands down the class horse in the race and will take the power of beating.
Following the official Winterbottom Stakes barrier draw on Tuesday evening there are now only two other horses under $10 for the win with the consistent Neville Parnham-trained Indian Pacific ($7.50) and last start winner at the track Celebrity Queen ($9).
Indian Pacific is drawn a treat in barrier four for jockey Brad Parnham and the Zoustar four-year-old is yet to finish worse than third in his six career starts.
Boasting strong Ascot form (5:3-0-2) he won the Listed Crawford Stakes (1000m) two back before his third when just over a half-length beaten by Celebrity Queen in the Group 3 Colonel Reeves Stakes (1100m) run in the mud on November 14.
The Grant & Alana Williams-trained winner of that traditional Winterbottom lead-up, four-year-old Redoute’s Choice mare Celebrity Queen will be attempting the double going up two kilos and jumps from gate 10.
Despite drawing one closer to the inside with barrier nine, the Adam Durrant-trained Written Tycoon six-year-old Stageman is on the drift in betting out to double-figure to turn the tables on Celebrity Queen following his second in the Colonel Reeves photo-finish.
In flying form having won four of his five lead-up starts is Brad Rawiller’s ride in the Winterbottom Stakes field, Elite Street, up in grade off back-to-back 1100m wins at the track this campaign.
Dan Morton’s progressive Street Boss four-year-old is at current Winterbottom odds of $15 after drawing one on the outside of Trekking in barrier 12, and Rawiller is happy with the gate.
“I’m happy enough…certainly Trekking is the main danger and we get first look at him and there’s a little bit of speed outside us,” Rawiller told The Races WA.
“We’re not drawn the outside, just looking at his style, you wouldn’t want to get caught in the open too long, but with the speed in the Winterbottom I’m more than happy where we have drawn.
“He’s a horse on the up who deserves the chance.”
