141 Nominations Taken for 2017 Ladbrokes Cox Plate

A total of 141 nominations have been taken for the 2017 Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m); the country’s premiere weight-for-age race at The Valley on October 28th.

Equine superstar Winx completed an impressive barrier trial at Royal Randwick this morning and has been will seek to equal the efforts of the legendary Kingston Town after being included in 2017 Ladbrokes Cox Plate nominations.

The star of Australian thoroughbred racing for more than two years, Winx is amidst and incredible run of winning form which now spans seventeen starts and twelve Group 1 triumphs, dating back to a dominant win in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) in May 2015.

Returning to the paddock after producing a career-best performance to win her second Cox Plate by more than eight lengths, the Street Cry mare resumed this year for a comfortable win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (2000m) before claiming another Group 1 win in the Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).

Beating a smart field with complete ease in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m), Winx was last seen claiming the $2.3 million winner’s check in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships.

A total of fifteen internationally-trained runners have been included in 2017 Ladbrokes Cox Plate nominations, including Highland Reel, Caulfield Cup runner-up Scottish and Japanese star Neorealism.

Highland Reel is no stranger to Australian racing and ran a credible third in the 2015 edition of the Cox Plate behind Winx and impressive local Criterion.

Saddled by leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien, Highland Reel is a multiple Group 1 winner in his own right and has returned to racing in typically outstanding form this year.

Seventh in the Group 1 Dubai Sheema Classic (2410m) first-up on March 25th, the Galileo entire posted consecutive wins in the Group 1 Coronation Cup (2423m) and Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes (2004m) before running fourth in the Group 1 King George VI And Queens Elizabeth Stakes (2405m) most recently.

Neorealism has produced several outstanding performances and results this year and is a live chance of contesting the Ladbrokes Cox Plate.

Winner of the Group 2 Sapporo Kinen (2000m) and finishing third in the Group 1 Mile Championship (1600m) most notably in 2016, the Neo Universe entire resumed this time for a smart win in the Group 2 Nakayama Kinen (1800m) before storming home to win the Group 1 QEII Cup (2000m) in Hong Kong on April 30th.

Scottish has been a standout for British Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby for several seasons and is likely to be set for the Ladbrokes Cox Plate this season.

Posting wins in the Listed Steventon Stakes (2017m) and Group 3 Strensall Stakes (1799m) prior to arriving in Australia last year, the son of Teofilo resumed this year for fifth in the Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Ascot on June 21st.

2016 Cox Plate placegetters Hartnell and Yankee Rose have been included in Ladbrokes Cox Plate nominations once more this year, while several other outstanding locals including forty-four three-year-olds also remain in contention.
