Sydney Back-Up Likely for Man Of His Word

Trainer Bruce Hill has revealed that classy four-year-old Man Of His Word is likely to remain in Sydney and be tested over 1800m for the first time at Royal Randwick on Saturday afternoon.

A strong and consistent performer for the Gold Coast horseman throughout much of his twenty-four career starts so far, Man Of His Word lined up for the Listed Winter Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens last weekend and flew home to finish a close second behind Slightly Sweet.

Hill has been understandably thrilled with the performances mustered by Man Of His Word this season and is eager to test the horse over a longer trip, before he is sent to the paddock.

“He is a horse who needs a big track. He has been so unlucky at home on small tracks,” Hill told AAP.

“We wanted to run him in the Stradbroke Handicap but when they switched it from Eagle Farm that was cancelled.

“He is not suited at Doomben.

“I will see how he is during the week but I’d like to try him over 1800 metres. We’ll give him a break after that and look at spring options.”

Man Of His Word immediately stamped himself as a horse to follow upon debuting at Doomben in early 2015 and has subsequently posted six wins and a further seven minors during his consistent racing career.

Trialling well in the lead-up to his current campaign, the Lope De Vega gelding clearly required a run when eighth in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) first-up on May 20th, but responded with a smart performance for fourth in the Listed Spear Chief Quality (1630m) a fortnight later.

Running on for third behind Religify and Payroll in the Listed GH Mumm Quality (1615m) on June 24th, Man Of His Word overcame a tough run in transit to finish third in the Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on the Sunshine Coast on July 1st, amongst particularly handy company.

Several smart horses including Kiwi import Sound Proposition and Marenostro has been included in nominations for the 1800m Open Handicap at Randwick on Saturday, while a final field is due to be confirmed by midday on Wednesday (July 19th).
