The lead-up into Saturday’s Apollo Stakes 2017 has been “faultless” for the returning superstar Winx according to her master trainer Chris Waller.
Over the past half-a-decade Waller has dominated the Sydney trainers’ ranks and needs little help to look good.
He is elevated from a great trainer to a champion horseman however by his stable ace Winx who will have all eyes on her first-up at Royal Randwick this weekend in the $250,000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m).
“There is always a bit of nerves when Winx starts her race campaign but she makes us look good,” Waller told The Daily Telegraph.
The five-year-old daughter of Street Cry is out to equal Phar Lap on 14 straight wins when she kicks off her autumn that will culminate back at the track on April 8 in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
The nine-time Group 1 winner was last seen posting her record breaking eight length Cox Plate victory over Hartnell.
Since then she has trialled twice officially in the perfect preparation and Winx was also on show for a smart track gallop at Rosehill Gardens this morning.
Regular rider Hugh Bowman was in the saddle for the 1000m piece of work, in which the wonder mare completed the final 400m in around 25 seconds.
“I think she is going as well as ever,” Waller told Racing NSW.
“Very satisfied with this morning’s work.
“She’s come together very well and I couldn’t be happier with the way the preparation has gone.
“This preparation has been the best one she has had. Everything has just been faultless. There’s been no rushing to get her back.
“She hasn’t got to this status by fluking wins, simply she is a very good horse and that gives us confidence towards Saturday and hopefully continue that winning sequence a little longer.”
Winx faces 11 rivals in the Apollo Stakes field after stablemates Savvy Nature and Global Glamour were withdrawn from the race.
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained dual Group 1 winning filly Global Glamour instead takes on her own kind in the $200,000 Group 2 Light Fingers Stakes (1200m) at the meeting.
“It was tempting to run in the Apollo and a lot of thought went into deciding which way to go,” Bott said.
Six-year-old import Savvy Nature also still runs on the Apollo Stakes Day card in the first carrying top weight in the $100,000 Ranvet Handicap (1600m).
Winx is already into $1.12 in Apollo Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering promotional odds of $1.80 on the odds-on favourite (Max Bet $25 / T&Cs apply).
Her only “danger” is Godolphin’s Melbourne Cup placegetter Hartnell ($9.50) whose record against the champion sits at 4-0.
