2016 Thousand Guineas Aim for I Am A Star

After a runaway Group 3 win at Morphettville over the weekend the Shane Nichols-trained filly I Am A Star will return to Melbourne this spring eyeing a run in the Thousand Guineas 2016.

The two-year-old daughter of I Am Invincible posted her second career win from three starts on The Goodwood Day on Saturday with an impressive three length victory in the Group 3 National Stakes (1200m) in Adelaide.

Prepared by Nichols at Mornington in Victoria, I Am A Star came off a win over 1100m at Flemington and handled the increase in both class and distance without a worry with her Black-Type success.

Getting a gun run from barrier one in the small eight-starter field, she saluted by the big margin beating home the local Richard Jolly-trained pacesetter Bangs by the easy margin with One Blink for Chris Parry a close third at $41 odds.

Ridden confidently by Steven King, I Am A Star settled off the pace before hitting her top speed halfway down the straight to surge home, pick up the frontrunners and steal the show.

The promising juvenile purchased for $40,000 as a yearling has now amassed $122,700 in prize money, but that’s only the beginning according to Nichols who confirmed plans to send her for a break and not press onto the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.

He is looking at something like the $500,000 Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) over the Caulfield mile in early October during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, a classic he has saddled up just the one previous starter in without success.

“I think the future looks really bright for her,” Nichols told Racing Victoria.

“Now she’s a Group 3 winner, she’ll have a little break and then we’ll target all the good fillies’ races in the spring.”

The mile should be to his filly’s liking according to Nichols who also raced her full-sister Band On The Run.

“I had the full sister (Band on the Run) and I thought she could run a mile and this filly is a better horse than her,” Nichols said.

“We’ll aim high and then see how we go from there.”
