Running at Flemington Racecourse on Saturday March 5, this year’s edition of the $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) is shaping up as an intriguing showdown between Group 1 winners from all over.

Futures Australian Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is led by WA filly Perfect Reflection and New Zealand-trained champion Xtravagant at $7.

One of just 18 fillies nominated to take on the boys in the classic, the undefeated Perfect Reflection is now prepared in Victoria by Melbourne Cup winning horseman Darren Weir.

Previously trained in Perth, the daughter of More Than Ready has won all five of her career starts including the Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) last start in early December.

She made history as the first filly to take out the Kingston Town Classic and if she makes the Australian Guineas field will be shooting to become the third filly in the past 10 years to win joining Shamrocker (2011) and Mosheen (2012).

The Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained Kiwi galloper Xtravagant was in flying form over his spring – summer campaign winning three on the trot including the Group 1 NZ 2000 Guineas (1600m) in November.

The Pentire colt suffered a shock loss last time out on January 16 however when fourth to Dukedom in the Group 1 Levin Classic (1600m), but is still Australian Guineas-bound this autumn.

Last year’s winning trainer Gai Waterhouse, who scored her second success with Wandjina, has three entries as she looks to go back-to-back emulating Mick Price who prepared Light Fantastic (2008) and Heart Of Dreams (2009) for successive wins.

Waterhouse’s hopefuls this season are Al Nader who ran third on debut at Randwick on Australia Day, Balboa Park and last start Sydney winning Fastnet Rock colt River Wild.

Price meanwhile is back chasing his third Australian Guineas win with five entries led by his Victoria Derby winner Tarzino.

An $11 chance in the all-in Australian Guineas odds, Tavistock colt Tarzino was last seen taking out the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) by an easy two lengths at Flemington on October 31.

He galloped with his Derby winning jockey Craig Newitt in the saddle on Tuesday morning and impressed ahead of his first-up run against the older horses in Caulfield’s Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) on February 13.

Price’s other headline Australian Guineas entry in 2016 is Caulfield Guineas third placegetter Ready For Victory who hasn’t raced since his ninth when dropped back in distance behind Japonisme in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) on Victoria Derby Day last October.

Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller won the Coolmore Stud Stakes with Japonisme and plays a very strong hand in the Australian Guineas nominations with nine entries.

Waller’s contingent is headed by Hinchinbrook colt Press Statement, winner of the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) in the spring.

That was the galloper’s second elite level win following his JJ Atkins success, also over the mile, in Brisbane during the winter and Press Statement is the $8 third favourite in Australian Guineas betting.

Waller’s other top hope at $10 for the win is Vanbrugh, the son of Encosta De Lago last seen winning the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick last October.

The other notable Waller-trained Australian Guineas hopes including Group 3 winning Northern Meteor colt Metallic Crown and Redoute’s Choice colt Counterattack who ran third to his stablemate in the Coolmore Stud Stakes last time out.

Other headline Australian Guineas nominations include Weir’s Flying Spur colt Mahuta who posted his fifth win on the trot in the $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas at the Gold Coast in early January, stablemate Palentino, the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Group 1 NZ Thousand Guineas winning filly over the mile Risque and Michael Moroney’s son of Sebring Tulsa.
