Geelong trainer Jamie Edwards is thrilled stable star Sertorius has been confirmed in the 2015 Melbourne Cup field and believes the talented gelding is a far better chance of success than his current $151 quote suggests.
Sertorius has been a strong and consistent performer for Edwards first appearing on course in early 2010; posting ten wins and fourteen minors through 41 career starts and several times placed in Group 1 feature races without being able to break through for an elusive success.
Edwards confirmed last weekend’s Victoria Derby-winning jockey Craig Newitt to take the ride on Sertorius in the 2015 Melbourne Cup and the pair are confident the horse will relish a step-up to two miles for the first time this season on Tuesday.
“The best part about this horse is his last two starts especially, his last 400m have been really, really strong,” Edwards posted on his website this week.
“And going to the two mile, it looks like it’s going to suit him.
“He’s had two solid runs over 2400m, up to the 3200m. I spoke to Craig Newitt the other day, and he’s very confident.”
Edwards has never saddled a Melbourne Cup runner before Sertorius, and is thrilled to play a part in Australia’s headline thoroughbred race in 2015.
“It’s great – you open up the Herald Sun, and here’s your horse’s name in the Cup sweep,” Edwards told Racing Ahead.
“You can’t really get your head around it – it’ll probably sink in tomorrow.
“Our job’s to make sure the horse’s right. He’s in such good nick.
“It’s probably why I don’t feel a lot of pressure with him – the horse is really well.
“He’s eating good, he’s prancing around the place. He’ll go as well as he can go.”
Sertorius does have experience racing over two miles previously and gained plenty of fans when running on for an impressive third in the 2014 edition of the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), won by fellow 2015 Melbourne Cup runner The Offer.
Sertorius has been charged with carrying only 52.5kgs in the 2015 Melbourne Cup and will leave from the ideal barrier 5.
Further to his generous $151 quote for success, Ladbrokes.com.au is currently offering Sertorius to finish in the first three at 2015 Melbourne Cup odds of $26 for success.
