Oaks campaign ahead for Anzac Day Stakes winner My Poppette

Co-trainers Colin and Cindy Alderson feel that they have a Crown Oaks filly after My Poppette scored a convincing win in the Listed $120,000 Phillip Schuler Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) at Flemington today.

My Poppette was stepping up to the 1410m for the first time and the Aldersons are looking forward  to trying her over more ground in the Spring  and will set out a program aiming towards the Group 1 $1m Crown Oaks (2500m) at Flemington during Melbourne Cup week.

“We always felt the 1400m was really going to suit her. I think the cut in the track is going to work in her favour long term,” Cindy Alderson said.

“We will put her away now, she is a stakes winner, which is great.”

“Mum bred her, she is the first foal out of the mare to race so we are pretty excited about that.”

“You have to give her the opportunity.  We always felt that she was a filly that would get over ground so we night consider a race like the Oaks.”

Winning jockey Mark Zahra did a good job to have My Poppette ($5 equal favourite) settle in a prominent position from a wide barrier and when he asked the filly for an effort in the straight she responded to score a comfortable from over Lizard Island ($8.50) and Petracca ($5 equal favourite).

The home grown two year old filly  was only having her third race start and after winning on debut over 1200m at Pakenham finished second over 1200m at Flemington before stpping up to Listed company.

Cindy Alderson said that a traditional Spring campaign would be to run in the Group 1 $500,000 Thousand Guineas (1600m) at Caulfield and possibly the Group 2 $300,000 Racing.com Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington in the lead up to the Crown Oaks.
