The Group 3 Yellowglen Stakes (1400m) is one of nine races making up Victoria Derby Day at Flemington this Saturday.
12 talented three-year-olds and up will race for the title this Saturday after the David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Rainbow Gold was scratched from the race.
Five of the runners are offering single figure odds in the Yellowglen Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, led by Hucklebuck at $2.50.
The Phillip Stokes-trained gelding opened and maintained favouritism after winning the Listed Durbridge Stakes (1200m) last time out. He shot onto the scene in August last year, winning five of his first seven starts including the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) a year ago and the Group 3 Hayes Stakes (1400m) in February of this year.
He hadn’t finished outside the top three when he made the step up in class for the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 1 but was unable to make ground in the race finishing eighth due to respiratory issues.
He then tried to win a race at the highest level once more in the Group 1 AAMI Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 7. He got crossed early despite starting from barrier one and resented being behind horses when the pace slowed. Despite trying hard up the running his run wasn’t good enough and he finished in sixth place.
Hucklebuck then had a four month spell before returning to the winners circle in the Listed Dominant Durbridge Stakes (1200m) on October 18.
He’s the clear favourite to win the 2014 Yellowglen Stakes but will need to beat his 11 rivals home, including four single figure hopefuls – Moonga Stakes third Generalife ($6.50), Woodbine ($7.50), Alma’s Fury ($8) who will enjoy the inside run from barrier one, and Turquoise King ($9.50).
Spy Decoder is the market mover of the betting, sitting just outside the single figure odds at $10 after getting a lot of support from punters and shortening from $15.
The Anthony Cummings-trained gelding will get the widest start after the scratching of Rainbow Gold who was due to start from barrier 13 but enjoyed an Inglis Plate (1400m) win by two lengths last time out.
Will the favourite win the 2014 Yellowglen Stakes? Or can one of the runners offering double digit odds cause an upset?
