The last of the nine Black Type races at Eagle Farm Racecourse for Stradbroke Handicap Day this Saturday is the 2014 Brisbane Cup – betting selections from the Races.com.au team found below.

There are 11 stayers set to face off at 4:20pm when the $300,000 Group 2 Croser Brisbane Cup (2400m) runs as Race 9 to finish off the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival’s biggest day of racing.

Five of those are under double figures in an open Brisbane Cup betting markets that are now led by two co-favourites with Moriarty and Zephyron both paying $3.60.

The Chris Waller-trained Moriarty carries the 59.5kg top weight after their nice victory with half a kilo less in the Group 2 Eagle Farm Cup (2200m) here last weekend.

The Clodovil six-year-old shoots for back-to-back Brisbane Cup wins too having won the race 12 months ago and looks in top form even with the big weight.

They do however give four kilos to the market mover Zephyron who has been backed in from $3.90 to $3.60 to win their third on the trot.

They enjoyed a Listed Rosehill win on May 10 backing up on Doomben 10,000 Day to win the Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m), an effort they’ll be looking to repeat with a little more weight over a bit more distance here.

Also at single figures are then evergreen veteran Precedence ($5) coming off a Premier’s Cup second, and the two horses that finished second and third behind Moriarty in last Saturday’s Eagle Farm Cup Mr O’Ceirin ($5) and Floria ($9.50).

With half the field under $10 to take it out, who are the safe Brisbane Cup bets to make this year?

1^st

#1 Moriarty ($3.60)

Carries the top weight but is the deserving favourite having won this 12 months ago after an Eagle Farm Cup fourth. They won that same lead-up this year suggesting they’re going better than last winter, Nash Rawiller stays on and knows them well having guided them for their past four wins. Go up from last year’s weight but that’s expected and if they can slot into a sweet spot again, and the track doesn’t get too wet, will be winning again.

2^nd

#4 Mr O’Ceirin ($5)

They ran second to Moriarty in the Eagle Farm Cup last time out and are tipping that same quinella here with that traditional lead-up the form line to follow for this. Has been outstanding in the sunshine state this prep including their luckless seventh in the Doomben Cup. Meets Moriarty 2.5kg better in the weights than last Saturday, enough for them to go forward and turn the tables? Will be the one to beat if the rain comes.

#4 Zephyron ($3.60)

Equal favourite, Glen Boss’ mount is and up-and-comer with definite claims. Great lead-up and is pretty tough with the speed on. Only lightly raced for their age so is improving all the time, up in class for this and has the outside barrier to overcome but if they get gutsy like they can could prove the late money right.
