Exciting two-year-old Lucky Tom has produced an impressive performance to claim the Listed The Phoenix (1400m) at Brisbane’s Eagle Farm Racecourse this afternoon, kicking clear to finish three lengths in the clear of a fast-finishing Goldie’s Image and Our Rock O’reilly.
Jumping from the gates well, the Lucky Owners gelding took up the early pace from resounding pre-post favourite Elitist, setting a fair tempo over the back straight and rounding the bend ahead of Emotions In Motion and Our Rock O’reilly.
Finding the final straight well-and-truly in control, Lucky Tom comfortably kick clear of the main pack and had The Phoenix won 200 metres from home.
Trainer Harold Norman was understandably pleased with Lucky Tom’s performance in the 2014 The Phoenix, but revealed he had always been confident in success immediately after the race.
“Very good, very pleased” Norman said following The Phoenix.
“He was a certainty before his last race and just had too much ability on them. He’s gallops are unbelievable and he’s a lovely winded horse.
“His racing won’t be like this in the future, you’ll find he’ll be a horse that will get back.”
Apprentice jockey Rikki Jamieson delivered an outstanding ride on Lucky Tom in The Phoenix, and was quick to praise the two-year-old’s notable versatility after the win.
“He’s been working really, really lovely and after his last run the penny dropped with him and he just proved it today” Jamieson said immediately after The Phoenix.
“He ran a really nice second in a mid-week Wednesday a couple of starts ago, but the one who beat him was outstanding and it wasn’t on a good track, so he’s pretty versatile.
“It’s pretty exciting and I can’t complain.”
Breaking through for a second race win in just his fifth competitive start in The Phoenix, Lucky Tom has stamped his claims as one to watch throughout notable two-year-old events in the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival.
