Chris Waller’s outstanding galloper and defending champ Shoot Out became a five-time Group 1 winner boosting their career earnings to well over $3 million with a brilliant come from behind win in the Chipping Norton Stakes 2013 today.

Waller, overcome with emotion after the big Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival feature at Warwick Farm, has now secured three consecutive wins in the $350,000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) with Danleigh taking it out in 2011 before Shoot Out’s back-to-back victories.
Six-year-old High Chaparral gelding Shoot Out, previously prepared in Queensland by John Wallace where they won their opening two Group 1’s, emulated their first-up Group 1 win in the George Main Stakes over the mile from the spring with another big effort in the Chipping Norton.
Last seen running a brave fifth to Ocean Park in the Cox Plate, Shoot Out proved their greatness once again with a massive effort here having been caught up in traffic throughout the run unleashing a powerful late sprint in the 1600m showdown that few horses could manage to do.
A good pace was set by Warwick Farm specialist Havana Rey, a four time winner at the track and distance, who hit the front early leading from Apollo Stakes winner Alma’s Fury and eventual runner-up Monton from the stables of Ron Quinton.
Shoot Out gave them a big lead trailing by eight lengths with about 800m left to travel looking to be going nowhere.
Jockey Hugh Bowman stoked them along approaching the turn for home but couldn’t get them into the clear right away having to change tactics.
“I as caught up in traffic I thought I can’t win going around them,” Bowman said.
“Then I changed my mind and it’s not very often you ride a horse good enough to change your mind on.”
In an excellent run from double-figure outsider Monton ($31) and jockey Christian Reith they moved up and got the lead from Havana Rey putting in a courageous shot at the title but the $4 favourite Shoot Out came late lunged right on the post for the photo win.
“It was an excellent win,” Bowman said.
“May I just say the second horse…it would have meant a lot for them (connections) to win the race and it would have been great to see him (Monton) win.
“But this bloke deserves it.”
Waller prepared two of the first three over the line today too with his other former Chipping Norton Stakes champ Danleigh ($6.50), a rising 10-year-old, running a great third.
But it was all about the big finish from the brave winner who had to come wide on the turn to get around them just getting there in a terrific run that hinted at a massive campaign to come.
“He needs no introduction it’s a pleasure (to train him),” Waller said of Shoot Out.
“I guess once they’ve done it, it shows they can (win a Group 1 mile first-up).
“These types of horses are an exception and we’re not used to them because they are few and far between.
“Danleigh’s done an amazing thing as well (to run third).”
Last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival Shoot Out backed up from their Chipping Norton Stakes to run third to Manighar, 11th in today’s race, in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and then second to super mare More Joyous in the $2 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).
After their run today they look on track for another shot at the 2013 Doncaster Mile run on April 20 at Royal Randwick, Shoot Out set to firm dramatically in the Doncater Mile odds at bookmaker.com.au after their win today as the best-weighted horse with 57kg in the race according to Waller.
“I think he’s fairly weighted in the Doncaster,” he said.
“Might be half a kilo more than he had last year.
“If More Joyous doesn’t run I think he’s the best weighed horse in the race.”
