The final field and barrier draw for the $500,000 Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) have been released ahead of the feature three-year-olds’ showdown running at Warwick Farm this Saturday March 12.
Known this year as the Turnpoint Guineas, the 2011 Randwick Guineas has attracted a final field of 11 gallopers.
Leading the list of acceptors is the Grahame Begg-trained Ilovethiscity, the Magic Albert colt coming off a dominant win in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on February 26.
A Group 1 placegetter having run a close third beaten less than half a length in the 2010 Golden Rose last August, Ilovethiscity resumed with a good first-up third in the Group 2 Royal Sovereign Stakes (1400m) at Randwick before their success in the Hobartville.
On Saturday in the Randwick Guineas Ilovethiscity is set to jump from barrier five with Brenton Avdulla in the mount as they head towards a start in the $2.5 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 16.
Currently leading online bookmaker Luxbet have Ilovethiscity as the $13 equal third-favourite in the 2011 Doncaster Mile betting odds behind $3.40 favourite More Joyous and Whobegotyou paying $8.
In-form trainer Peter Snowden has entered two of his stable stars in the Randwick Guineas this year with Hobartville Stakes second and third placegetters Retrieve and Skilled drawn in barriers eight and three respectively.
Also coming up trumps in the Randwick Guineas barrier draw where the David Payne-trained Caulfield Guineas third placegetter Masquerader in gate two with Hugh Bowman booked for the ride and Michael Moroney’s improving gelding Absolutelyawesome set to start on the rails from gate one with Glen Boss in the mount.
Payne has also paid up for last year’s Victoria Derby runner-up Praecido to contest the Guineas on Saturday drawn in barrier six, while fellow Sydney trainer Chris Waller will be represented by Pressday.
Group 1 winning Domesday colt Pressday, however, has suffered a blow drawing the far outside barrier with gate 11 for Saturday’s showdown.
Finishing off the 2011 Randwick Guineas field are the Gerald Ryan-trained Snitzel colt Top Drop (barrier four), Bart Cummings’ Shamardal colt Goldstone (barrier nine), Duelled gelding Shootoff (barrier 10) and the Gai Waterhouse-trained Redoute’s Choice colt Light Brigade (barrier seven).
