All the big money that was on Bart Cummings’ So You Think to win the 2010 Melbourne Cup at Flemington today stays with the bookies as the superstar only managed third behind French stayer Americain.
So You Think was the $3 favourite at Luxbet to back up his sensational Group wins this spring with a Melbourne Cup victory, but despite a gallant run the High Chaparral four-year-old couldn’t hang on and faded to finish third in the $6 million Melbourne Cup.
Ridden by jockey Steve Arnold, So You Think was given every chance but he wasn’t suited to the slower pace and he over-raced a little early.
Despite hitting the lead at around the 300m, So You Think started to fade over the final 100m and Americain, who had been held back beautifully poised three out, made their move.
French jockey Gerald Mosse, bought over to Australia to maintain his association with Americain, then let his talented mount go and Americain ran down the leader and pulled away from the field to win the 150th Melbourne Cup by nearly three lengths.
Americain paid a generous $12 to win at Luxbet, rewarding punters that backed the Americain-bred, French-trained and Australian-owned runner following his eye-catching win in the Geelong Cup last start.
The other run of the Melbourne Cup result was the brilliant second by Maluckyday, a late addition to the Melbourne Cup field after winning The Lexus Stakes last weekend.
