2010 Doomben 10,000 Final Field & Preview

This Saturday the action of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival continues at Doomben when the picturesque course hosts their third feature meeting of the year, the Carlton Mid Doomben 10,000 Day.

The $650,000 Group 1 Doomben 10,000 (1350m) is the headline event and has this year attracted a capacity field of 16 horses plus five emergencies.

Ortensia is likely to start as the odds-on favourite, despite the Tony Noonan-trained mare having drawn wide with barrier 15. The four-year-old daughter of Testa Rosa was impressive when taking out the Group 1 Galaxy (1100m) in April at Randwick, and is coming off an unlucky fifth to Albert The Fat in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m).

Magic Albert gelding Albert The Fat has fared even worse in the barrier draw, the Eden Petrie-trained five-year-old still a solid chance after continuing to improve in form throughout this season.

Other BTC Cup placegetters backing up with a run in the Doomben 10,000 on Saturday include runner-up Melito, fourth placegetter Mic Mac, and King Mufhasa who finished sixth, while third placegetter, the Bart Cummings-trained Latin News is the fifth emergency.

Trained by Gerald Ryan, Melito will be one of the favourites for Saturday after the TJ Smith Stakes winner drew well well with barrier four.

Last start winner of the All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick, Les Bridge’s Nothin’ Leica Dane mare Hot Danish has also drawn ideally for Saturday with gate three.

Melbourne Cup winning trainer Mark Kavanagh has entered his star four-year-old Whobegotyou in the 2010 Doomben Cup, the Street Cry gelding having his first up run this season after an impressive spring campaign last year that finished off with him running sixth in the Cox Plate.

Other great features at the meeting will be the $150, 000 Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2200m) for three-year-olds, and the $125,000 Group 3 Premier’s Cup (2200m).
