Gai Waterhouse’s imposing six-year-old gelding Theseo claimed his fourth Group 1 victory on Saturday when he took out the first Group 1 race of the autumn in Sydney, the $300, 000 Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
Held at Warwick Farm for the first time in three years, the 2010 Chipping Norton Stakes was a thrilling affair as Theseo, in only his second start back from a long spell due to injury, claimed a powerful yet narrow victory ahead of odds-on favourite Rangirangdoo.
Theseo ($7) led from the start but was challenged by the Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo ($2.70) who moved up to the rails and into the lead inside the 100m mark.
Theseo pulled out a brilliant last burst of acceleration to push to the front, crossing the line a half head in front of Rangriangdoo. Rangriangdoo’s stablemate Danleigh ($7), fresh off a win in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes, did well to make up ground and finish two lengths back in third place.

The meeting also featured a number of other great Group race features including the $150, 000 Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m) won by Gai Waterhouse’s impressive filly More Joyous; the $125, 000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) where Solar Charged burst into Golden Slipper favouritism; and the $125, 000 Group 3 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) also taken out by Waterhouse when her four-year-old son of Choisir Dreamscape beat home Triple Honour.
