The Bondi Stakes is a $1 million Special Condition race for three-year-olds held at Randwick in Sydney on the same day as Melbourne's coveted Cox Plate.
The Bondi Stakes is one of the newest races on the Australian Racing Calendar. Part of the wider The Everest Carnival, the $1,000,000 Special Conditions feature race runs at Randwick Racecourse in late October on the same day as Melbourne’s Cox Plate Day at The Valley.
Inaugurated in 2019 when the favourite Kubrick saluted for the punters, the Bondi Stakes is run over 1600m at set weights and is open only to three-year-old horses.
From 2021 the million-dollar showdown was accompanied on the Randwick race card by the $2 million The Invitation (1400m), an invitation-only event for fillies and mares.
The Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) a fortnight earlier is the key lead-up into the Bondi Stakes offering a ballot exemption into the mile showdown and in 2020 Peltzer became the first to do the double.
The next spring, Hilal became the latest horse to complete the Stan Fox Stakes – Bondi Stakes double when also saluting for the punters in the $1 million feature as the $2.35 favourite.
The 2021 Bondi Stakes took place at Randwick on Saturday October 23rd, 2021 and was won by the Hawkes Racing-trained top elect Hilal ($2.35).

Confident the Chris Waller-trained Coastwatch can bounce back after his narrow defeat to Hilal (also racing in the Bondi Stakes) as the beaten favourite in the Stan Fox Stakes last time out. Prior to that he was third in the Golden Rose, with the runner-up Anamoe franking that form with a Caulfield Guineas win. Think he’ll run the mile and return to winning form.
The spring’s Bondi Stakes field features some of the best three-year-old middle-distance horses from Australia, many of which may have previously contested the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill the month before.
The Bondi Stakes 2021 race field will be confirmed on the Wednesday of race week and published below as soon as available.
The 2021 Bondi Stakes final field features 10 three-year-olds with markets led by Hilal and Coastwatch who ran the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes quinella at the track over 1500m last time out.
