2016 Tokyo City Cup Field & Betting Odds: Raw Impulse Favourite

Darren Weir’s lightly-raced stallion Raw Impulse is the firming favourite to take out the Tokyo City Cup 2016 at Morphettville Racecourse in Adelaide this weekend.

Two stakes races headline the program at the latest Adelaide Spring Racing Carnival meeting on Saturday including the $100,000 Listed Penang Trophy (1800m), registered as the Tokyo City Cup.

Running as Morphettville Race 4 at 4:33pm (local) as the penultimate event on the card, this year’s Tokyo City Cup field originally drew 14 final acceptors.

The line-up is now down to 11 however after the early scratching of the Robert Hickmott-trained trio: Observational (10), Nevis (9) and Foundry (7).

Of the remaining hopefuls the clear favourite in Tokyo City Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is Raw Impulse paying $2.30 to win from gate five with Dean Yendall aboard.

Yendall replaces Damien Oliver in the saddle of the Maki five-year-old who comes off a fourth to Mihany at Moonee Valley on September 3 in a mile handicap.

That followed on from another fourth when finishing four lengths off the winner Ecuador at Randwick in late May’s Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) as the beaten odds-on favourite.

Second-up on Saturday Raw Impulse has a gun record two runs in (3-2-0-1) and as a winner of four of his 10 career runs to date, is looking to come good for the punters after his somewhat disappointing effort first-up.

Occupying the second line of Tokyo City Cup betting at $5 is the Tony McEvoy-trained Alpine Eagle carrying 59.5kg at set weights plus penalties.

The five-year-old High Chaparral stallion is three runs into his spring prep and comes off two unplaced Melbourne runs in Group 1 company.

The latest was only last weekend when eleventh to Palentino at Flemington in the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m).

He is right down in class this weekend, has previous winning form at the Morphettville track and on class alone can win this if he returns to his best form.

Three other runners are also at single-figures including Yulong Baby ($8.50) in the outside alley with Jamie Kah riding the Mick Price-trained Victorian visitor.

A five-year-old daughter of Commands, Yulong Baby comes off a string of consistent form at home in Melbourne including a last start third when under a length off Bold Sniper over 2040m at Moonee Valley on August 20.

She’s had the little freshen-up since and even from the outside alley, dropping back to 1800m here can run a good race.

The other two best fancied by the bookies are the in-form Mr Wonderful ($9.50) shooting for his fifth win on the trot and the early market mover Jim’s Journey ($12 into $9.50) drawn in barrier two.

Peter Gelagotis saddles-up High Chaparral gelding Mr Wonderful who has won his past four on the trot, including his latest win over this distance (1800m) at Sandown-Hillside on August 24.

He carried 57kg to victory that day and looks well-weighted here on 56kg with South Australian hoop Anthony Darmanin booked for the ride.

The local Peter Blanch-trained Jim’s Journey meanwhile is out to improve on a last start ninth in the Listed Balaklava Cup (1300m) from late August.

The Good Journey five-year-old was only 2.2 lengths off the winter that day and will appreciate getting back to his pet track at Morphettville (12-4-1-2), which he sees for the first time since his close fourth to Purple Smile in the Group 2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) back in mid-March.
