2016 Magic Millions Guineas Barrier No Help for Madotti

Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn admits another wide barrier for his Vo Rogue Plate winning filly Madotti is no help in her attempt at back-to-back Gold Coast wins in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2016 this Saturday.

The always-honest daughter of Falvelon had no luck on the Gold Coast Magic Millions Race Day last year when posted wide without cover throughout the entire Magic Millions 2YO Classic after jumping from barrier 11 of 16.

She was brave late eventually crossing under two lengths away fourth to the winner Le Chef as a $31 outsider and gets the chance to atone when she runs in this summer’s $2 million Gold Coast Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m).

It will be her fifth run at the Gold Coast track where she improved on a third to Secret Saga on November 28 in the Listed Mode Plate (1200m) at Doomben to win the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m) by a half-length on December 26.

Dunn credits that Boxing Day win at the Coast to Madotti’s nice barrier two of 15 draw, but knows she won’t get things all her way again from a wider gate this weekend.

“She finally drew a good gate last time and she got the job done,” he told Racenet this week.

“Her entire career has been a hard luck story – if she drew a decent gate she probably would have won the Magic Millions 2YO race last year.

“She wasn’t far away and was posted three and four deep the whole way.”

Tye Angland retains the ride on the last start winning filly who currently pays $17 in the latest Magic Millions 3YO Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au who are offering Best Tote or SP + 20% on the full Gold Coast card on Saturday.

“She’s a high-quality filly. She won the Vo Rogue comfortably and I think she has improved off that, but the barrier doesn’t help,” Dunn said.

Dunn also saddles-up $26 hope Dram Of Red from barrier five in Saturday’s Restricted Listed feature, Jeff Lloyd aboard the Red Element gelding.

Dram Of Red won over 1100m at Doomben two back before his disappointing 11th to his stablemate in the Vo Rogue in his first look at the Gold Coast, an effort that was braver than it appeared according to Dunn.

“His run was better than it looks on paper,” Dunn said.

“He drew awkwardly (in barrier 13) and had to go back and then was forced very wide around the home turn.

“You can’t do that at the Gold Coast but I thought his run was ok and nowhere near as bad as it looks.

“His form into that was good on firm ground and I think he’s going to start way over the odds on Saturday.”

The best fancied of the three-year-olds in the Magic Millions Guineas this season are the Darren Weir-trained Mahuta ($4) who jumps from the second widest barrier chasing his fifth straight win, the Bjorn Baker-trained Vo Rogue third placed filly Egyptian Symbol ($4.80) and Wyong Magic Millions Stakes winner Flippant ($5.50).
