Thousand Guineas 2014 Field & Odds Update: High Above Scratched

Held on Caulfield Guineas Day for the first time this year, the 2014 Thousand Guineas field for this afternoon is down to 10 hopefuls following the early scratching of the Anthony Cummings-trained High Above.

Due to jump as Caulfield Race 8 at 5:05pm (local), the $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) is one of three elite levels on the program and while there is one scratching, plenty of top class fillies remain in the mix.

The firming favourite in the Thousand Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au is the Robert Smerdon-trained daughter of Fastnet Rock, Lumosty.

She originally opened at $5.50 then was quickly cut to $4.20 and continues to firm in the markets now paying $3.70 making her the definite market mover.

She’s been super consistent with a win and three minor placings from her four career starts to date, all but the most recent being in black type company.

Twice before at Caulfield including a third in the Blue Diamond Fillies Prelude back in February behind subsequent Group 1 winner Earthquake, Lumosty caught the eye first-up on October 1 when beating home a mediocre field by a blistering nine lengths at Sale with Craig Williams aboard from barrier one.

Today Williams stays on but the well-fancied duo is drawn wider in gate seven.

#6 Lumosty is the Thousand Guineas market mover now into $3.70 favouritism

In an open Thousand Guineas betting market there are then four other single figure hopes to win with:

  • #2 Go Indy Go ($5 into $4.60) – Drawn in gate six with Steven Arnold replacing Clare Lindop, This Adelaide-trained daughter of Bernardini is a Group 1 winner in Sydney last season when beating home the boys including a number racing in today’s Caulfield Guineas in the Champagne Stakes over the Randwick mile. She’s proven then over this distance and improved off an unexplained flop in the Danehill (15th of 15) when third in the Prelude last time out. Will be improving with more distance too so top chance.
  • #3 Afleet Esprit ($5 into $4.80) – Money is also coming in for this flying David Hayes & Tom Daberning-trained daughter of Bel Esprit who shoots for her fourth straight win. She boasts four wins from six starts so far including a Flemington black-type over 1100m on September 13 over Lumosty and the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) last start on September 28. Gets the rails run here, which she had for her half-length Prelude win, and faces a similar field.
  • #1 Bring Me The Maid ($7 into $6.50) – Peter Moody-trained Sebring filly is a dual Group 2 winner in Sydney, both her victories being on Heavy-rated tracks. Group 1 third in the Golden Slipper last season and was a top fancy for the Golden Rose this time in but could only manage to run eighth. Last start in the Prelude for this she was third last (7th) on a Good (3) so hard to see improvement off that when conditions are almost exactly the same here. Hasn’t seen a mile and think she needs a wet track.
  • #5 Amicus (Steady at $9.50) – Last of the single figure hopes, this Fastnet Rock filly comes from the in-form stables of Chris Waller and she’s been in exciting form this time in. Two previous runs at Caulfield for two second place finishes both over 1400m including in the Prelude when a half-length off Afleet Esprit. She had barrier six and Jim Cassidy that day so is a bit wider (9) with Hugh Bowman today.

The next best in the Thousand Guineas odds are then the Tony Gollan-trained Prelude fourth placegetter Traveston Girl ($14 into $13) and Group 3 Champagne Stakes runner-up from September 26 Tahni Dancer ($15 into $14) both coming off nice lead-up form.
