Savvy Nature Tops 2013 Spring Champion Stakes Odds

Despite being defeated last time out, John O’Shea’s Spring Stakes champ Savvy Nature has opened the punters’ pick to win the weekend’s Spring Champion Stakes 2013 at Royal Randwick.

Bringing the Group 1 Sydney Spring Racing Carnival action to a close, this year’s $400,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) is set to run as Race 6 on Saturday jumping at 4:02pm (AEST).

Of the 14 smart three-year-olds accepted for the set weights clash it is Savabeel gelding Savvy Nature in barrier eight that the bookies have tipped to win.

In the latest Spring Champion Stakes odds Savvy Nature is at a firming $3.50 to post their second win from three starts after their nice effort in the Group 3 Spring Stakes over the Newcastle mile two back.

They backed up at Rosehill a fortnight ago and were defeated a long neck by Complacent in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1800m), an effort they are tipped to improve on going up to the 2000m for the first time in the Spring Champion.

There are then three other single-figure fancies in the Spring Champion Stakes odds with:

  • #5 Complacent ($4.80) – Defeated Savvy Nature last start in the Gloaming Stakes from barrier one and should get another gun run drawn on the rails again, Kerrin McEvoy is replaced by Christian Reith on Peter Snowden’s ultra-consistent Authorized colt who is after career win number three from five
  • #8 Rock Hero ($5.50) – In-form Fastnet Rock colt prepared by David Hayes, won by six and a half lengths last month over 1550m at Canterbury in a run that caught the eye of many even though they only carried 51.5kg, had 54kg on their back last start and were impressive again this time hanging on to win the Listed Dulcify Quality Handicap over the Randwick mile
  • #6 Drago ($7) – Considered a top chance for this and then the $1 million Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington in November, as are Savvy Nature and Complacent, and will be donning blinkers to help correct their habit of getting too far back which cost this Anthony Cummings-trained Danehill Dancer colt a finish closer than ninth in the Golden Rose and third in the Gloaming Stakes

Looking a little further down the Spring Champion Stakes betting markets there are then a number of other livewire chances at generous prices including the Gai Waterhouse-trained Northern Meteor gelding Equator ($12) coming off a Dulcify third, Sebring colt Criterion ($13) who ran second in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes last start and Anthony Cummings’ other runner Thunder Fantasy ($15).
