2013 Caulfield Cup Second Acceptances Leaves 72

Today Racing Victoria took second acceptances for the Caulfield Cup 2013 which runs on Saturday October 19, the list of hopefuls cut from 98 first acceptors to 72.

Fiorente

One of the ‘Big Three’ Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival features, the $2.5 million Group 1 BMW Caulfield Cup (2400m) lost just six from the top 40 ranked hopes including Fiorente.

Rated an $18 chance in Caulfield Cup betting, which is led by Chris Waller’s flying four-year-old Hawkspur, the Gai Waterhouse-trained Fiorente will instead concentrate on the $3 million Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) – second declarations for the Moonee Valley classic on October 26 also taken today.

Waterhouse still has six genuine Caulfield Cup horses in the mix however including Hill Stakes runner-up from last Saturday Glencadam Gold, Julienas who runs in the Colin Stephen in Sydney this weekend and her shortest-priced hope Ecuador a last start Rosehill winner over 1800m.

Going by the ratings the other big name Caulfield Cup defectors at second declaration stage included a trio of internationals with Ed Dunlop’s former Melbourne Cup runner-up Red Cadeaux, the Johnny Murtagh-trained Royal Diamond and British raider Now We Can (Nicolas Clement).

All three were also missing form Cox Plate second acceptances.

Waller meanwhile also chose not to accept for his Hill Stakes failure Bayrir and injured Doomben Cup champ Beaten Up in either the Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate.

Waller still has five top Caulfield Cup hopes in the mix however including the top two in betting with Hawkspur who ran fourth in the George Main last start and runner-up in that same Group 1 mile feature Royal Descent.

Other top fancies in the futures Caulfield Cup odds accepted today include the Mark Kavanagh-trained Super Cool, USA St Leger winner Dandino, top Kiwi mare Silent Achiever and the progressive Lloyd Williams-owned import Masked Marvel.

2013 Caulfield Cup third declarations close on Tuesday October 8.

Updated betting on the Cup will be up shortly at Ladbrokes.com.au making now the time to sign-up with this online bookie to get in on the spring action!
