The 2026 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes results at Caulfield delivered a long-awaited maiden Group 1 success for the talented Chris Waller-trained Angel Capital, who finally converted his immense promise into Australia’s highest level of racing with a commanding victory on Saturday.

Having consistently performed against elite company throughout his career, the five-year-old son of Harry Angel was rewarded for his perseverance, producing a powerful finishing burst under Ben Melham in the Group 1 $1 million Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on Underwood Stakes Day to defeat last year’s winner Sepals ($11) by three-quarters of a length, while Regal Award ($9.50) fought on bravely for third.

Starting at $5, Angel Capital relished the strong tempo set up front before Melham angled the gelding into clear running approaching the turn, allowing him to unleash the acceleration that has so often seen him competitive at the highest level.

The victory pushed his career earnings beyond $2.8 million and added a maiden Group 1 trophy to a record that already featured placings in the William Reid Stakes, C.F. Orr Stakes, and Newmarket Handicap.

Group 1 Breakthrough Rewarded

Speaking on behalf of the Waller stable, assistant trainer Darren Beadman said the result was richly deserved after a series of luckless Group 1 defeats.

“He’s five years old and he’s been unlucky so many times in Group 1 races,” Beadman told Racing Victoria.

“Congratulations to Mr Zhang and the whole Yulong team. They’re heavily invested here in Australia, and he’s been deserving of a Group 1 win for so many runs.”

Beadman credited both the race shape and Melham’s understanding of the horse as key factors behind the breakthrough performance.

“The way the race panned out today with a good, strong speed up front suited him perfectly. Ben has the utmost faith in the horse, and he rode him to perfection,” he said.

The Sydney powerhouse was also quick to praise the efforts of Waller’s Victorian team, who prepared the gelding for his career-defining performance.

“It’s been a really big day for the stable and I have to give a lot of thanks to Lizzie and all the staff down here. They’ve done a fantastic job with him,” Beadman added.

Melham Unlocks the Talent

Few riders know Angel Capital better than Melham, who has partnered the horse throughout much of his career and has long maintained the gelding possessed Group 1 ability.

After the win, Melham admitted he arrived at Caulfield confident everything had fallen into place for the horse.

“Finally. We’ve praised this horse’s ability from day one,” Melham said.

“I just knew today was the first time he’d been in a suitable race where I thought everything would go to plan under the right conditions.”

The leading jockey said the horse’s ability has never been in question.

“The ability’s never been the question with him. He’s a very good horse, but he’s just so big and such a brute. He’s not an easy horse to ride,” he said.

“When things go his way, you’ve seen what he can do.”

Melham also paid tribute to the horse’s maturity and the work behind the scenes that allowed him to perform at his peak on race day.

“He’s come a long way. He’s raced against the best company all the time and he’s been stiff not to have won a Group 1 up until now.”

“When things go his way, he’s a very, very good horse. He deserves it.”

Career-Defining Victory

The Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes victory capped an outstanding day for the Waller operation and finally delivered the elite-level success Angel Capital’s form had long suggested was within reach.

Having chased home some of Australia’s best sprinters and milers over the past two seasons, the talented galloper was able to capitalise on the ideal race setup and prove himself a worthy Group 1 winner.

With Melham producing a perfectly judged ride and the Waller stable again demonstrating its ability to peak a horse for the right target, Angel Capital’s breakthrough success was one of the highlights of the Melbourne spring carnival so far and may prove the catalyst for even bigger victories ahead.
