Redzel Gears Up for 2018 Doomben 10,000

Team Snowden’s reigning champion Redzel is on track for another shot at the Doomben 10,000 in 2018 looking to go back-to-back in the Brisbane sprint feature on May 12.

Last Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained son of Snitzel secured the first elite level success of his career taking out the Group 1 $700,000 Doomben 10,000 (1200m) in a one-hit raid in Queensland.

Since then the class five-year-old has taken his career earnings up in excess of $8.69 million thanks to a string of subsequent wins including the inaugural running of the world’s richest race on turf, The Everest, and the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington.

Redzel has had three runs this campaign for two Group 1 seconds and his Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) win.

Last time out at Randwick on April 7 he was beaten two lengths in a shock loss behind Gerald Ryan’s outstanding three-year-old and subsequent All Aged Stakes winner Trapeze Artist in the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes (1200m).

The five-year-old will be looking for atonement then heading up to Brisbane for the Doomben 10,000 where he chases successive victories for the first time since Apache Cat (2008-09).

Redzel is set to trial on the Randwick course proper over 1050m in an open hit-out on Monday morning to keep him fit ahead of Doomben 10,000 Day.

“Redzel worked well [on Thursday] morning, Kerrin McEvoy came over to ride him and the horse is ticking along well,” co-trainer Peter Snowden told The Daily Telegraph.

“He will run in the [Doomben] 10,000 in two weeks and then spell before we get him ready for The Everest again.”

Now worth $13 million in total prize money, The Everest takes place over 1200m at Randwick on October 13 and Redzel pays $5 as the second elect behind Trapeze Artist ($4.50) in futures markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Trapeze Artist became the first horse to secure a slot in the 12-horse The Everest field this week, followed by Benjamin Smith’s brilliant mare from Newcastle In Her Time.

In Her Time is also set to line-up in the Doomben 10,000 field next month, the recent The Galaxy winner and last start TJ Smith Stakes third placegetter the $3.50 second pick in pre-field markets behind Redzel ($2.50).

To back Redzel next race in the Doomben 10,000 2018 at the best winter carnival prices head to Ladbrokes.com.au now.
