Doncaster Mile Hopes Head 2018 Ajax Stakes Field & Odds

This weekend on Coolmore Classic Day at Rosehill Gardens a field of potential Doncaster Mile horses will take to the track in the Ajax Stakes 2018 field.

Comin' Through

Due to run as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:50pm (AEDT), this year’s Group 2 $200,000 Hyland Race Colours Ajax Stakes (1500m) attracted 10 runners including five from the stables of Chris Waller.

Waller saddles-up half the Ajax Stakes field and his contingent is led by the early favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au, Comin’ Through ($3.90) drawn a treat in gate two.

The in-form Michael Walker who won the Australian Cup and Adelaide Cup on Saturday and Monday respectively for the Lindsay Park stable is aboard Waller’s four-year-old son of Fastnet Rock second-up on Saturday.

Walker rode the gelding for his unplaced run in last October’s Group 1 Toorak Handicap (1600m), and was also aboard for back-to-back wins earlier that season on the bay.

Comin’ Through resumed on February 17 at Randwick running a close third only a quarter-length off his stablemate Endless Drama in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) and has been freshened-up since.

All going well and the horse will be racing at Randwick on April 7 in the Group 1 $3 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) with the Ajax Stakes – Doncaster Mile double last completed by It’s Somewhat (2017) last autumn.

Futures Doncaster Mile betting on the first acceptances list Comin’ Through as a $51 roughie, a price sure to firm with an Ajax Stakes win on the weekend.

Following in the Ajax Stakes betting markets at $4.80 is the fellow Waller-trained Tom Melbourne in gate four with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

A perennial runner-up, the Dylan Thomas seven-year-old races for the first time since his failed 11th over in Perth’s Group 1 Kingston Town Classic (1800m) back in December.

Prior to that he ran third in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) at the same track and second to Waller’s mare Shillelagh in the Group 1 Kennedy Mile (1600m) on VRC Derby Day.

Tom Melbourne has a good record fresh (6:2-2-0) and has trialled twice ahead of his return where he is out to break a lengthy winning drought going back to March of 2016.

Waller’s Ajax Stakes runners are rounded out by McCreery ($21) in the outside barrier, flying Mossman four-year-old Cellarman ($10) chasing a fourth win on the trot and the returning Life Less Ordinary ($11).

The other best in betting meanwhile are Prized Icon ($5) and the early market mover Arbeitsam ($7) for Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.

Prized Icon is the shortest-priced of the Ajax Stakes runners in all-in Doncaster Mile betting paying $26 to win the Group 1 next month.

Prepared by Newcastle’s Kris Lees, the dual Group 1 winning More Than Ready entire has been in top form this autumn including his last start second behind glamour mare Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m).
