2017 WA Guineas Odds: Money Maher vs Perfect Jewel

Despite a wide barrier draw for the Group 2 feature of Railway Stakes Day on Saturday the Grant & Alana Williams-trained filly Perfect Jewel remains the danger in WA Guineas 2017 betting for Money Maher.

Running as Ascot Race 7 at 4:15pm (AEDT) on the weekend’s first Group 1 race day of the Perth Summer Racing Carnival, this season’s Group 2 $500,000 Sky Racing W.A. Guineas (1600m) has drawn a full field of 16 plus two emergencies.

Two of the gun three-year-olds in the mix are battling for top spot in the latest WA Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with the Daniel & Ben Pearce-trained Money Maher the narrow favourite ahead of Perfect Jewel.

Al Maher colt Money Maker has finished out of the money just once in five starts at the Ascot track and is out over a mile for the first time in Saturday’s half-a-million-dollar classic.

He comes off a two length romp home on November 11 in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m) as a $15 shot, but won’t be found at such a generous price in the WA Guineas.

Money Maker is the current $4.20 favourite, jockey Jarrad Noske retaining the ride, and the youngster is drawn in gate 11.

Out in barrier 16, which will become 15 at best if the emergencies fail to gain a start, is the close $4.60 second favourite Perfect Jewel.

Top Perth hoop William Pike partners the exciting daughter of Redoute’s Choice who has won three of her four career stats.

Perfect Jewel suffered her first loss last time out on November 7 when a close fourth behind Mikimoto in the Listed Burgess Queen Stakes (1400m).

That was her first test over 1200m, so there are a few questions over how the Bob Peters-raced filly will see out the 1600m.

Despite the size of the WA Guineas field this summer, just two other hopefuls currently sit under $10 for the win with Art Series ($8) and Arcadia Prince ($9).

The other best fancied filly taking on the colts and geldings in the race, the Darren McAuliffe-trained daughter of Sebring Art Series put the writing on the wall with a Group 3 win last weekend.

Third to Perfect Jewel only a half-length beaten in late October’s Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m), Art Series has improved with each run finishing second in the Burgess Queen before her Group 3 WA Champion Fillies Stake (1600m) victory.

Returning to the same track / distance on the short seven day turnaround, Art Series is one of the few Guineas hopes proven at a mile and she is drawn well in gate nine with last year’s Railway Stakes winning jockey Douglas Whyte coming on for the ride.

Arcadia Prince meanwhile is the other Williams-trained three-year-old in the line-up, Damien Oliver over for the ride on the well-bred son of Pierro.

Pierro progeny performed well during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival including the filly Pinot winning the VRC Oaks.

Arcadia Prince won back-to-back races earlier this prep before making his black-type debut in the Fairetha Stakes when just over three lengths beaten in fourth.
