2017 Eclipse Stakes Field & Betting: Raw Impulse Favourite

The Darren Weir-trained European import Raw Impulse is tipped to break his Group maiden status with a win in Saturday’s Eclipse Stakes 2017 at Sandown’s Ladbrokes Park.

One of the key support acts of Zipping Classic Day, this season’s Group 3 $150,000 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) runs as Sandown Race 9 at 5:20pm (AEDT).

The penultimate event on the card, the Eclipse Stakes field features 14 stayers and the rails run from barrier one belongs to Weir’s six-year-old Makfi stallion.

Raw Impulse sits top of the early Eclipse Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.90 to salute for the punters in the quality handicap clash.

Damian Lane retains the ride following a second over the Flemington mile last Saturday where Raw Impulse carried 58.5kg, the drop to 56kg on Saturday to suit.

Occupying the second line of Eclipse Stakes betting in 2017 is the consistent Richard Laming-trained Not A Single Doubt mare Payroll ($6).

She jumps from barrier seven with Damien Oliver back from suspension and booked to ride the five-year-old on 54.5kg.

That’s 1.5k less than Payroll carried on Emirates Stakes Day for second in the Group 2 Matriarch Stakes (2000m), before which she was third in the Group 2 Blazer Stakes (1400m) on October 7.

Equal on $9 for the Eclipse Stakes win this spring are Jacquinot Bay and Dodging Bullets drawn alongside each other in barriers nine and 10 respectively.

Cory Parish jumps aboard veteran Galileo 10-year-old Jacquinot Bay, the Lindsay Park-trained warhorse last seen running under a length away third in the same race last weekend that produces Raw Impulse.

Having his 68th career start on the weekend, Jacquinot Bay is out to improve on his 10th in the Eclipse Stakes last spring carrying 58kg and is better weighted on 55kg this time round.

Dodging Bullets carries 55.5kg in the form of Regan Bayliss, the in-form Symon Wilde-trained Dash For Cash gelding chasing his third win on the trot.

The Warrnambool-based six-year-old saluted at Moonee Valley over 2040m on Cox Plate Eve before winning the Kyneton Cup (2000m) on November 8.

The early market mover and Eclipse Stakes equal top weight meanwhile is the international raider Kidmenever prepared by Godolphin trainer Charlie Appleby.

The British visitor is up to 59kg with Kerrin McEvoy in the saddle after an eight on debut in Australia on October 14 in a disappointing Group 2 Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) performance.

Also carrying 59kg is the John Sadler-trained Galileo seven-year-old Observational, the $17 chance coming off a distant eighth in the Sale Cup (1600m).

Observational was better back in April winning the Listed Golden Mile (1600m) at Bendigo over Jacquinot Bay before success in Caulfield’s Group 3 Easter Cup (2000m), so gets the chance to return to form second-up on Saturday.
