Astoria Leads 2017 Gloaming Stakes Field & Odds

The Godolphin-raced Astoria is red hot favourite in the Gloaming Stakes 2017 betting markets to post his second win on the trot heading to Rosehill Gardens on Saturday for Golden Rose Day.

There are 11 three-year-olds set to face off in this year’s Group 3 $200,000 James Boag’s Premium Gloaming Stakes (1800m), the 2017 Spring Champion Stakes lead-up running as Rosehill Race 6 at 3:15pm (AEST).

Dominating the latest Gloaming Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.60 and firming, the James Cummings-trained Medaglia D’Oro colt on the quick back-up following his Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) win over the Newcastle mile last Friday.

Astoria chases his first win over further than that on the weekend before possibly tackling Randwick’s Group 1 $500,000 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) on October 7.

Things didn’t quite go his way on Newcastle Cup Day but he still got the job done and he looks like he’ll eat up the extra metres here and will be nearing peak fitness third-up.

The danger in Gloaming Stakes betting also comes for the Godolphin stable with the fellow Cummings-trained Sanctioned occupying the second line of the markets at $3.50.

Drawn one outside his slightly better-fancied stablemate in gate three, Sanctioned has Hugh Bowman aboard for his third run of the season.

The Teofilo colt ran third to Dracarys two back in the Group 3 Up & Coming Stakes (1300m) and then finished runner-up to Gold Standard at Rosehill a fortnight ago in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m).

Both Dracarys and Gold Standard run in Saturday’s Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m), while Sanctioned will look to post his first win as a three-year-old getting out over the extra metres.

Outside of the dominant Godolphin duo there are three other single-figure fancies in this year’s Gloaming Stakes field including the Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young-trained Sully ($8.50) chasing a third win on the trot.

The Reliable Man grey has won two of his four starts to date in easier company, the latest over the mile at Bendigo on September 14.

This will be a chance for the up-and-comer to prove he can handle tougher company and he is being kept safe in the markets with Melbourne Cup winning hoop Corey Brown coming on for the ride.

The others at the top of the markets are David Payne’s Stan Fox Stakes fifth placed colt Ace High ($9.50) and last start Kembla Grange winner Thy Kingdom Come ($9.50), one of three in the race for trainer John Thompson, drawn in barriers nine and eight respectively.

Ace High was beaten three lengths as a $26 roughie last time out and was also not far off The Mission when fourth in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) during the autumn.
