Ciaron Maher‘s star filly Tempted is the hot favourite to salute for the punters and secure a hat-trick when up in grade for Saturday’s Group 1 $1 million Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill Gardens.

Despite being one of the standout races for three-year-olds of the spring, the 2025 Golden Rose Stakes field has drawn just nine young hopefuls.
What the event lacks in numbers it makes up for in class with plenty of progressive types in the mix including Street Boss filly Tempted who sits top of the Golden Rose odds at $2.90 through Ladbrokes.com.au.
As a juvenile she enjoyed two Group 2 wins including the Percy Sykes Stakes which she won by nearly two lengths on the back of an eye-catching third in the $5 million Golden Slipper at Rosehill.
Fresh in her first assignment for Maher since transferring from the care of Hong Kong bound James Cummings she was equally impressive dominating the Group 2 Run To The Rose (1200m).
All the money is now coming for her to relish the step-up to 1400m and complete the Run To The Rose – Golden Rose Stakes double for the first time since Bivouac (2019).
Maher is in the hunt for his maiden Golden Rose success and also saddles-up the rank outsider in the field with his Group 1 placed colt State Visit by the late sire Wootton Bassett who passed away this week.
Runner-up to Vinrock by a narrow margin at big odds in the Inglis Sires’ over this distance in the autumn, he has been left alone by punters for Saturday’s feature after his flat first-up performance crossing four lengths back fifth to Tempted in the Run To The Rose at 60/1.
Another son of Wotton Bassett and the danger at current Golden Rose odds of $4.80 is Wodeton for Chris Waller.
Wodeton is set to get the run of the race from barrier one with ace hoop James McDonald back in the saddle of the autumn’s Golden Slipper runner-up.
As a three-year-old the up-and-comer has had two solid runs when second fresh in the Group 3 San Domenico Stakes (1100m) on August 30 before a fourth in the Run To The Rose when doing his best work late in a run that impressed hoop Jason Collett.
“He was great. Just had to give them a big start. Was back and wide but loved his last 150m,” Collett said.
Waller is a three-time Golden Rose winning trainer with his latest being in 2023 with Militarize.
He saddles-up four of the nine three-year-olds in the field this weekend with Wodeton joined by stablemates – untapped The Autumn Sun colt Autumn Boy ($5.50), Sixties ($14) who beat Autumn Boy home last start in the Group 3 Ming Dynasty Quality at this track and trip on September 13, and Beiwacht.
Beiwacht is the early Golden Rose Stakes market mover heavily supported in from $11 to $8.50.
He is a son of Waller’s 2019 champ Bivouac and has run well in the traditional lead-ups crossing third in the San Domenico and second in the Run To The Rose, but his ability to see out a strong 1400m remains a query.
The 2025 Golden Rose Stakes is scheduled as Rosehill Race 8 at 4:05pm (AEST) on Saturday’s 10-race Sydney card.
