A key lead-up into the $20 million The Everest on October 18 takes place at Randwick on Saturday with a couple of already confirmed slot holders for the world’s richest turf race heading betting on the 2025 The Shorts field.

The Group 2 $1 million The Shorts (1100m) has a terrific record of producing The Everest performers with Classique Legend (2020) the last to do the double.

Heading The Shorts odds at $2.50 through Ladbrokes.com.au this spring is the Nathan Doyle trained Private Harry who will line-up for Yulong Investments in the big one next month.

The undefeated Harry Angel four-year-old boasts a flawless five-from-five career record to date and he’s a short-distance specialist with three of those victories being over 1100m.

Private Harry, Joliestar and Briasa are all confirmed for The Everest and face off in The Shorts this weekend!

He races for the first time since claiming Rosehill’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) as a three-year-old back in March and has looked the goods with two sharp trial wins ahead of his return.

Drawn barrier five with regular rider Ashley Morgan continuing associations, Private Harry is currently listed at $7 for The Everest in futures markets which are dominated by Hong Kong sensation Ka Ying Rising ($1.70).

Currently six sprinters have locked in their shot at The Everest title and a further two of those are also in The Shorts field with the Chris Waller trained Joliestar ($5) and Briasa ($4) for Team Hawkes.

Three-time Group 1 winning Zoustar mare makes her delayed return to racing after scratching out of the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes for strategic reasons after she drew awkwardly.

She was last seen claiming the Kingsford-Smith Cup in Brisbane over the winter and boasts a lovely first-up record (5:3-1-1) ahead of her second The Everest campaign kick-off on the weekend.

Joliestar is drawn barrier nine in the 10-horse The Shorts field with ace hoop James McDonald booked for the ride.

Five-year-old Smart Missile gelding Briasa – selected by Max Whitby, Steve McCann, Colin Madden & Neil Werrett for this year’s The Everest – also resumes in The Shorts from barrier four with Tyler Schiller to ride.

Winner of the Group 2 TJ Smith Stakes in the autumn, he was last seen running fourth when up to 1400m for the All Aged Stakes in April beaten only 1.4 lengths by Jimmysstar.

He’s been brought on fitness wise with two winning trials, the latest of which had him putting nearly three lengths on Marhoona over 1000m at Rosehill on September 9 showing he was ready to fire fresh and get his spring underway.

The rest of the field are all at double-figures to upset one of the already locked in The Everest horses.

There will sure to be plenty of eyes on Marhoona however who could prove value at $15 first-up as a three-year-old with the Michael Freedman trained Snitzel filly having won the Golden Slipper at her latest back in March.

The Slipper form has recently been franked by the placegetters including Tempted (3rd) who went on to win the Group 2 Percy Sykes as a two-year-old before her huge return to shoot to the top of Golden Rose betting with a dominant Group 2 Run To The Rose success last Saturday.

That stacks up well for Marhoona in her campaign kickoff from gate seven with Tommy Berry to ride.

The 2025 The Shorts is set to run as Randwick Race 9 at 4:40pm (AEST) as the penultimate event on the card.
