With Cox Plate nominations down from 137 early entries last year, this season the Group 1 2040m feature at The Valley will offer an unprecedented $6 million in total prize money including $4 million to the 2025 Cox Plate winner.

2025 Ladbrokes Cox Plate Nominations: Quick Glance

  • 108 total nominations taken
  • Down from 137 in 2024
  • 11 international nominees
  • Defending champion Via Sistina current all-in $2.50 favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au
  • 30 for Chris Waller chasing his sixth trophy
  • Whirl (Aidan O’Brien) shortest priced of the internationals at $15
  • Whirl one of four for legendary Irish horseman and former winning trainer Aidan O’Brien

Looking at the latest Cox Plate futures odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au, top honours is predicted to again go to Chris Waller‘s now eight-year-old daughter of Fastnet Rock who blew her rivals away last spring to claim the WFA championship.

Via Sistina has won a subsequent four Group 1 races since her Cox Plate triumph and was last seen including beating a gun field at Randwick in the autumn’s $5 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Via Sistina is out to become the first back-to-back Cox Plate winner since the historic four-peat of her former star stablemate Winx (2015-18)!

Waller’s journey in the ‘race where legends are made’ has been an historic one with the leviathan horseman having also prepared the iconic four-time champion Winx.

Having recently acquired the Carbine Lodge stables of Godolphin at Flemington with James Cummings’ departure for Hong Kong, Waller continues his growth in Victoria with gusto heading into this spring’s majors and that includes his potential Cox Plate contingent.

He boasts an imposing 30 official Cox Plate nominees with the all-in $2.50 favourite and defending champion set to be joined by a long list of stablemates come the October 25 classic.

Trainer Chris Waller has 30 Cox Plate entrants in 2025 chasing his sixth success!

Other standout Cox Plate entrants for the Waller stable include ATC Derby winning filly Aeliana, a currently undefeated daughter of The Autumn Sun Autumn Glow, three-time Group 1 winner Lady Shenandoah and the always honest Fangirl who boasts four Group 1s on her CV but whose only Cox Plate performance to date produced a 7th to Romantic Warrior in 2023.

The Cox Plate nominations also featured 11 international raiders from outside of Australasia looking to join a growing list of overseas visitors to claim the prestigious piece of silverware.

Four horses trained outside of the Southern hemisphere have claimed top honours in the Cox Plate.

Adelaide (2014) and State Of Rest (2021) both were Irish-trained at the time of their wins by Aidan O’Brien and his son Joesph respectively, while Lys Gracieux (2019) won for Japan and most recently Romantic Warrior (2023) saluted for Hong Kong.

2025 Ladbrokes Cox Plate International Entries

  • Aidan O’Brien (Ireland): Bedtime Story, Diego Velazquez, Mount Kilamanjaro, Whirl
  • Joseph O’Brien (Ireland): Al Riffa, Galen
  • Richard Hannon (England): Haatem, Persica
  • Brian Meehan (Ireland): Rashabar
  • Jessica Harrington (England): Hotazhell
  • Shizuya Kato (Japan): Cosmo Kuranda

Currently the shortest priced of the international Cox Plate contenders for 2025 is Aidan O’Brien‘s classy Wootton Bassett filly Whirl who will race as a four-year-old down under being a European three-year-old.

Of the international horses nominated for the Cox Plate this spring, a significant portion are from Ireland.

O’Brien leads the charge with Whirl one of his four entries, while his son Joseph could also chase a second success with two entries.

Another of the more intriguing of the internationals is Japan’s Cosmo Kuranda trained by Shizuya Kato who is a son of 2011 Caulfield Cup winning mare Southern Speed.

Last year in the 2024 Cox Plate results the internationals ran second and fifth with Japanese entrant Prognosis and UK galloper Docklands respectively.

Following Via Sistina in the updated Cox Plate betting odds meanwhile are the likes of Tony Gollan‘s Doomben Cup winning Queenslander Antino ($7), Matt Laurie’s VRC Oaks – ATC Oaks double winner Treasurethe Moment ($13), and another evergreen eight-year-old looking to enjoy a big spring in Lindsay Parks‘ stable ace Mr Brightside ($15).

Cox Plate stalwart Mr B will be contesting the event for the fourth year running following his previous performances in 2022 (7th), 2023 (2nd), and 2024 (4th).

The 2025 Caulfield Cup nominations also closed on Tuesday with 146 early entries including 12 internationals with Waller again dominating the list with 32 entrants.

Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup first acceptances for 2025 are open until midday on Tuesday the 9th of September.
