There was a notable upset in Saturday’s 2025 Australian Guineas results at Flemington with Dominic Sutton‘s underrated three-year-old Feroce showing plenty of talent to win the Group 1 mile feature.

Betting on this year’s Group 1 $1 million Australian Guineas (1600m) was thrown wide-open on race morning after the withdrawal of the favourite Angel Capital.
Without the Autumn Stakes winner there to dominate, the others in the mix were given their chance to shine and it was Super Seth gelding Feroce at $14 who best took advantage saluting by three-quarters of a length off a good ride by Billy Egan who gave a big pose for the photo thrilled to be aboard the Australian Guineas winner in 2025.
In his first Group victory, Feroce handed local horseman Sutton his maiden elite level success at just his second year as a trainer.
“I can’t even think of a word to say right now. Crazy. I’ve got so many people to thank,” Sutton told Racing.com post-victory.
“To the horse, look, we can’t do it without the horse, and he’s just an absolute warrior. We thought we had him right for the day. Everyone sort of probably wrote him off a little bit off his first up run, but Bill just came in and said he’s flying, mate. He just hated the soft ground, I can’t quite believe it, to be honest.
“It’s going to take a few days to settle in. To be honest, I’ve just been having a really tough run of running seconds recently, so I was hoping to just get a winner anywhere. So, to do it on the biggest stage of all with this horse, he’s been the flag bearer for our stable since day one.”
It was Stay Focus in front with 350m left to go in the feature race at Headquarters before the Kiwi raider, last start Group 1 BCD Group Sprint placegetter Savaglee, who moved up on the outside to challenge.
Savaglee hit the front at the 200 but all eyes quickly went to Egan on Feroce at the juicy odds who came with a fierce late run to charge past the New Zealander and extend in the final few strides for an important victory.
“I was just hoping he’d really knuckle down and go past that leader,” Sutton said of how the last 100m played out.
“He’s had a tendency of just getting his head up a little bit, but once Billy changed the stick through, and gave him a couple more reminders, he really let down and flew.”
In third completing the Australian Guineas trifecta a further length back was the spring’s Victoria Derby champ Goldrush Guru in another good performance ahead of the longer distanced autumn features.
Feroce went one better than his second to Private Life when under a length beaten as a 40/1 outsider in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) last October.
He came via a lead-up third to Sepals, who started favourite only to finish fourth, in the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes at the track so the form was there for the punters that chose to look.
“It took a long time to get over the Caulfield Guineas, I’m not going to lie,” Sutton said of the narrow spring defeat.
“A lot of people were congratulating us, but I still felt pretty bitter about it all, thinking that we could have won on that day. And we all know how hard it is to win these races and to have a horse good enough and present him in the right order on the day.”
“So, sometimes you think, ‘Am I going to be waiting for a long time now until the next one comes along?’
“But the horse has just been super. He’s just improved, improved, improved.”
The Australian Guineas champ is now guaranteed a start in the recently upgraded Group 1 $2.5 million The All-Star Mile (1600m) back at Flemington on March 8.
The inaugural All-Star Mile winner, the filly Mystic Journey back in 2019, is the sole three-year-old to win the race to date.
Updated 2025 All-Star Mile odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au on Feroce to be the next have firmed into $21.
