The rescheduled 2025 Magic Millions 2YO Classic headlined the Friday night action at the Gold Coast and saw an upset in the $3 million Restricted Listed feature with Bjorn Baker trained filly O’Ole easily accounting for her rivals at double figures in an emotion-charged edition of the event.

The progressive daughter of Ole Kirk was given a peach of a ride under the lights by Tommy Berry who used their favourable gate three draw to sit on pace throughout before hitting the front 100m out from the line and charging home the closing stages for a 1.5 length win over the Peter Snowden trained Capitalist filly Memo who went down as the beaten $4.80 favourite to the $12 winner.
It was a repeat of the all-filly quinella from the Wyong Magic Millions 2YO Classic back in December.
In third the best of the colts over the line completing the Magic Millions 2YO Classic trifecta was Gallo Nero for Team Hawkes who crossed two lengths off the surprise champion.
“From day dot she was a superstar,” Baker said of O’Ole speaking to Sky Thoroughbred Central post-race.
It was an emotional victory coming a decade after Berry’s late brother, Nathan, won the same event on Unencumbered also for Baker from the same gate three draw in a similarly powerful performance.
“She drew gate three, she had Tommy Berry on, and when Unencumbered won 11 years ago we had Nathan Berry on, he drew gate three, and he was very much like her, strong, fast,” Baker added.
“I got very emotional, I was in the taxi thinking of Nathan, we miss him a lot.
“So, very special.
“Racings got a funny way of coming full circle.”
O’Ole is now a two-time Magic Millions winning filly with her career earnings exceeding $1.9 million.
“It means so much,” Berry said after celebrating his third Magic Millions 2YO Classic victory following his earlier wins aboard Karuta Queen (2011) and Driefontein (2012).
“Since that day, they’ve named the trophy after Nathan, it’s the Nathan Berry Trophy every year and I’m sick of handing it out, I wanted to win it again.
“Ironically, I get to do it for Bjorn Baker, who Nathan was pretty much stable rider for and he obviously won on Unencumbered here for Bjorn 10 years ago.
“It might have even been from the same barrier so the starts aligned today.
“It’s an amazing sport and I’m blessed to be a part of it.”
Berry believes the sky now looks the limit for O’Ole.
“She wins the start every time by a length and she did that again today,” he said.
“I kept looking over and using her just as much as I had to to get her into that nice one-one spot and she did the rest from there.
“She’s a beautiful filly.
“She’s by Ole Kirk who I had a lot to do with and I’m sure they sold really well at the sales because he (Ole Kirk) is another good one.”
