The second installment of the 7 Stakes takes place in Sydney on Saturday with a small field of spring contenders vying for the $1 million prize at Royal Randwick.
This year’s 7+ Sport Stakes (1600m) field is down to just eight runners with the early withdrawal of Zardozi leaving the punters with a diminutive line-up for the mile showdown.
Sitting top of the latest 7 Stakes 2024 odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au to improve on her third to Think It Over last year is Chris Waller‘s multiple Group 1 winning mare Fangirl at $2.10 and firming.
James McDonald rides the consistent Sebring six-year-old from the outside alley second-up after her close half-length third fresh in the Group 1 Winx Stakes (1400m) here in late August.
She looks set for the mile now second-up with improvement to come from the reigning King Charles III Stakes winner who is likely to sit off the speed before chasing them all down the closing stages.
Waller saddles up three genuine hopes in the 7 Stakes field this weekend with the top elect joined in the line-up by Zougotcha ($4) and Hinged ($11) drawn barriers three and two respectively.
Tommy Berry partners the talented Zougotcha again on Saturday with the five-year-old daughter of Zoustar coming off a devastatingly close, photo-finish second to Via Sistina in the Winx Stakes.
She was on fire before that last time in winning three on the trot including claiming the Group 1 Coolmore Classic – Queen Of The Turf Stakes double.
Zougotcha is a two-time winner at the Randwick mile and loves the course (9:4-2-0) putting her right in the mix to get the better of Fangirl again here.
Six-year-old Worthy Cause mare Hinged is out to break an extremely lengthy drought not having won since swimming on a Heavy (10) course to claim the Group 1 Surround Stakes as a filly back in February of 2022.
She has been competitive in plenty since including her last start second beaten a nostril-flare by stablemate Buckaroo here in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) a fortnight back.
The early 7 Stakes betting market mover backed into $5 third favouritism is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Royal Patronage.
Tim Clark continues associations with the European expat whose Australian debut on September 7 produced a promising Group 2 Tramway Stakes victory over Amelia’s Jewel in an upset at double-figures.
The six-year-old entire won’t be found at that price here chasing back-to-back wins up in weight but suited to the mile.
The last of the single-figure hopefuls is the rails-drawn Detonator Jack ($9.50) for Ciaron Maher.
The winter’s Doomben Cup runner-up resumed with a fifth in the Winx Stakes, has a decent second-up record and is after his first win since claiming the $1 million The Gong at Kembla Grange last November.
The 2024 7 Stakes is set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 3:55pm (AEST) on Saturday’s 10-race card.
