Mr Brightside is odds-on favourite to go back-to-back and become the first two-time winner of The All-Star Mile when the seventh edition of the event takes place at Caulfield this weekend.
Last autumn the Lindsay Park-trained super horse took out the All-Star Mile at The Valley, but he gets an even bigger advantage for his title defence as the now $3.75 million event moves to Caulfield during its annual track rotation.
A dozen of the season’s best milers take to the track in this year’s race and Craig Williams rides the top elect from wider out in gate 11.
Bullbars six-year-old Mr Brightside is airborne this campaign and comes off back-to-back Group 1 wins at the track having completed the C.F. Orr Stakes – Futurity Stakes double over 1400m.
He is now five-from-six at Caulfield and is fit and ready to fire up to the 1600m now, a distance he boasts an imposing record over (16:10-2-1).
The updated All-Star Mile odds at Ladbrokes.com.au on the final acceptances reflect his superiority with Mr Brightside $1.90 to salute.
The only other challenger under double-figures in the post-acceptance markets is classy mare Pride Of Jenni ($3.40) drawn midfield in gate six with Declan Bates continuing associations with the talented six-year-old.
The Ciaron Maher-trained six-year-old has just the one Caulfield win from nine previous starts at the track to her name, but she oozes ability having completed Flemington’s Group 1 Empire Rose Stakes – Champions Mile double over this distance in the spring.
Fresh she was outstanding when going down a nose to Mr Brightside in the CF Orr on February 10 and she has been kept fresh since ahead of another clash with the galloper this weekend.
The veteran of the field is the next best in All-Star Mile betting with the evergreen Godolphin-raced nine-year-old, Cascadian, paying $11 to return to winning form from barrier seven with Ben Melham riding.
The chestnut has amassed just shy of $8.5 million in stakes over his 51-start career and boasts winning form up to 2000m.
His latest victory was around this time last year when saluting in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.
Fresh he had no luck when ninth of nine runners in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), but he showed lovely Randwick improvement when fourth to Think It Over in the Group 1 Verry Elleegant (1600m) last time out ahead of his trip south for the All-Star.
Saturday marks Cascadian’s third attempt to take out the event following his fifth to Zaaki at Flemington in 2022 and second when a half-length of Mr Brightside at big odds at Moonee Valley last autumn.
Desert Lightning at $15 is one of the best ‘Win and You’re In’ chances in this year’s event with the New Zealander out to rain on the locals’ parade.
The Peter & Dawn Williams-trained Pride Of Dubai four-year-old makes his first trip across the Tasman having earned his spot in the All-Star Mile field on January 27 taking out the Aetaroa Classic (1600m) at Ellerslie in an upset.
His latest had him running third to LA Crique in a Group 1 WFA mile race back home and he gets his chance down under now from gate eight with Vinnie Colgan riding.
Jamie Kah, who scored an emotional Newmarket Handicap win to take out the inaugural Dean Holland trophy aboard Cylinder last Saturday, looks to continue her outstanding autumn riding Ayrton from gate five.
Ayrton is a $15 pop in the latest markets for Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr.
The six-year-old was in Stakes winning form on Australia Day here in the Listed Barton Stakes (1400m) before a CF Orr fifth and third in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m).
The All-Star Mile 2024 is scheduled as Caulfield Race 8 at 4:15pm (AEDT) on Saturday’s 10-race card.
