A select field of nine three-year-old staying types take to the track for this year’s Group 1 $600,000 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) with markets at Ladbrokes.com.au led by the in-form Pericles at $2.90.
The son of Street Boss has his first Rosehill run and returns to Sydney for the first time this prep of two good lead-up runs at Sandown.
He was only a length off Glint Of Silver fresh at Hillside in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) before relishing a rise in distance to dominate the Group 2 Autumn Classic (1800m) results on Blue Diamond Day by nearly three lengths.
Pericles is tipped to frank the form from down south up in distance again for the Rosehill Guineas where he jumps from barrier sixth with super hoop James McDonald coming aboard for the coveted ride.
The danger occupying the second line of Rosehill Guineas betting is the early market mover Elliptical ($4.20) for Anthony & Sam Freedman.
Mark Zahra partners the Dundeel colt from the inside alley with barrier one last producing a Rosehill Guineas winner back in 2010 with Zabrasive.
Elliptical brings into the race some very hot form lines including from the spring when second to Golden Mile in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) and second to Sharp ‘N’ Smart next-up in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick.
He went down the barest of margins that run before holding his own for a brave seventh to Zaaki by a respectable margin in the Group 1 VRC Champions Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.
Fresh Elliptical won the Group 3 CS Hayes (1400m) before his 2.4 length back seventh to Legarto in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m).
The youngster lost few admirers that run down the straight and is sure to appreciate getting back out over a trip third-up and fit this weekend.
In an open market a further three potential ATC Derby-bound horses are under $10 to win the Rosehill Guineas this year including the $6 third elect Lindermann.
Chris Waller’s nicely-bred Lonhro colt is the best fancied of the runners off a Sydney lead-up having finished runner-up to Communist in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) a fortnight back.
Nash Rawiller jumps on for the ride in the Rosehill equivalent this weekend from the outside barrier out to hand Waller with a third victory after his back-to-back success with D’Argento (2018) and The Autumn Sun (2019).
Rawiller is also a two-time Rosehill Guineas winner with the jockey guiding the aforementioned Zabrasive to victory in 2010 for John O’Shea before a win on the Gai Waterhouse-trained Laser Hawk two years later.
Waller also saddles-up the spring’s Victoria Derby winner Manzoice ($9.50) from gate seven with Kerrin McEvoy partnering the Almanzor colt second-up off an eighth in the Randwick Guineas.
Rounding out the single-figure fancies is the Mark Newnham-trained Matcha Latte ($8) with the Maurice colt ticking a number of boxes.
He is yet to win over further than 1300m but was thereabouts in the Spring Champion Stakes under a length back fourth last October over 2000m.
Running out of his skin fresh at 25/1 he crossed a neck third to Osipenko in the Group 2 Hobartville Stakes (1400m) and is out to atone for a sixth in the Randwick Guineas from March 4.
The 2023 Rosehill Guineas is set to run as Rosehill Race 4 at 2:00pm (AEDT) as the first of five Group 1 races on the Slipper Day card.
