Royal Randwick is host to a huge race card on Saturday looking to draw some of the attention away from Melbourne’s coveted Cox Plate Day program with racing in Sydney headlined by the Group 1 $2 million Spring Champion Stakes (2000m).
A nice potential lead-up to the VRC Derby and VRC Oaks down south over the Melbourne Cup Carnival, the Spring Champion Stakes field has draw a dozen final acceptors this season.
Sitting top of the latest Spring Champion Stakes odds at $3.80 through Ladbrokes.com.au is Dundeel colt Elliptical bringing up the hot Melbourne form.
He’s been rising through the ranks rapidly and was excellent when runner-up behind Golden Mile only a nose beaten in the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 8.
A double-figure outsider that day, he won’t be found at that price on Saturday sure to suit the rise to 2000m.
In an open market a further four runners are also at single-figure Spring Champion Stakes odds including the $5.50 second elect Williamsburg in gate two with Kerrin McEvoy to ride.
The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Snitzel colt is also a previous Group 1 place-getter having finished third to She’s Extreme here on a Heavy (8) in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m) as a two-year-old.
This prep he’s had four runs and was last seen finishing third in a devastatingly three-way photo-finish behind Sharp ‘N’ Smart in the Group 3 Gloaming Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Stakes.
Another sure to relish the extra distance on the weekend, Williamsburg’s chances will also increase with any rain as a strong wet-tracker.
Anthony Cummings’ elite level winning filly She’s Extreme presents as a danger at $6 out wider in gate 10.
The three-year-old daughter of Extreme Choice is out to be the fourth filly in seven years to beat home the boys in this event and the first since Montefilia (2020).
Winner of the Group 1 Champagne Stakes over the mile in the autumn she comes via some good Sydney lead-ups.
Two back she ran sixth on a Good (4) Rosehill track when only three lengths off Jacquinot in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m) before making up ground in her last start second behind Zougotcha in the Group 1 Flight Stakes (1600m) on Heavy going.
The flying Graeme & Deborah Rogerson-trained Kiwi expat Sharp ‘N’ Smart ($6.50) chasing a hat-trick after a win fresh in the Gloaming Stakes and the progressive David Atkins-trained Promitto ($7.50) round out the hopes under $10 for the win.
Promitto is on the quick seven-day back-up having run a brave third in open age company last Saturday behind Cascadian in the Group 3 Craven Plate (1800m).
The 2022 Spring Champion Stakes is set to run as Randwick Race 8 at 4:45pm (AEDT) with the latest markets from Ladbrokes.com.au available in full here.
