Anamoe Dominates Might And Power Stakes 2022 Field & Betting

Godolphin’s gun four-year-old Anamoe headlines a diminutive but top-class field of Cox Plate hopefuls when just eight runners take to the Caulfield track in the Neds Might And Power 2022 this weekend.

The Group 2 $1 million Neds Might And Power (2000m) – formerly the Caulfield Stakes – is one of three elite level races on the Caulfield Guineas Day card in Melbourne on Saturday.

The event is an important lead-up into the famous Group 1 $5 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at The Valley on October 22 and Winx (2016) was the last to do the double.

This season the James Cummings-trained son of Street Boss, Anamoe, is tipped to be the next after winning back-to-back Group 1s in Sydney this time in.

He was last seen holding out Icebath in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on September 17.

Anamoe now races third-up back in Melbourne for the first time since his devastatingly close second to Irish raider State Of Rest in last year’s Cox Plate results.

He was narrowly denied success in the Australasian weight-for-age championship on the back of a Caulfield Guineas win over the mile last spring.

This year he runs on Guineas Day but over the 2000m from barrier three in the Might And Power with James McDonald continuing associations.

Anamoe sits top of the Might And Power Stakes odds online at $2.40 through Ladbrokes.com.au and is currently the $3 all-in favourite for the Cox Plate 2022.

There may only be eight runners in the Might And Power field, but we look in for an exciting edition of the event with three of Anamoe’s rivals also under $10 for the win.

Occupying the second line of betting is the Annabel Neasham-trained Zaaki ($4.60) also looking for Cox Plate atonement after being scratched out of the event the morning of as the pre-race favourite due to an elevated temperature last year.

Zaaki is third-up in the Might And Power Stakes having followed the same path as last year into the event.

In 2021 he won the Tramway Stakes – Underwood Stakes double before a third to Probabeel as the beaten odds-on favourite in this race.

This year he successfully defended his Tramway title first-up at Randwick in the mud before a third to behind all-the-way winner Alligator Blood in the Underwood Stakes on September 25.

The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained All Too Hard six-year-old Alligator Blood was outstanding in his fighting victory in the Underwood and returns for the Might And Power Stakes.

Drawn barrier five with Tim Clark aboard again, the former Queenslander is at $6.50 to do the double going up to 2000m for the first time.

Between Zaaki and Alligator Blood in the markets is the rails-drawn I’m Thunderstruck ($5.50).

Mark Zahra sticks aboard the Shocking five-year-old who won the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) at Flemington two back before his fourth when only a length beaten in the Underwood.

The other best out of the Underwood Stakes in the Might And Power this weekend is the second placed Mo’unga.

Zaaki’s stablemate was excellent in the Underwood at a big price and looks a forgotten chance this Saturday at $12.

The Ben & JD Hayes-trained Doncaster Mile winner from the autumn Mr Brightside ($16) coming off an Underwood fifth, last start Group 3 Kingston Town Stakes runner-up Benaud ($26) for John O’Shea and last year’s Caulfield Cup runner-up Nonconformist ($61) complete the field and markets.

The Might And Power Stakes 2022 is set to run as Caulfield Race 7 at 3:50pm (AEDT).
