Mark Newnham and jockey Rachel King celebrated back-to-back wins in the Group 2 $250,000 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick thanks to a brilliant all-the-way victory by exciting mare Greysful Glamour.
Twelve months ago, the duo was in the winners’ stall in the same summer feature with Crackerjack and it was another popular victory with the well-backed Greysful Glamour saluting in the 2020 Villiers Stakes results.
King gave the five-year-old daughter of Stratum the perfectly-timed ride, allowing the grey to get to the front and roll along as she so loves to do.
“It was pretty to watch,” Newnham told the media post-win.
“She got control of the race, which she loves to do.
“Trademark kick early and held on. A great effort by horse, stable and rider.”
Race favourite, the Godolphin-raced Criaderas meanwhile was racing well back in the field off the wide alley settled around third last throughout.
Heading the field by around two lengths with 600m to go, Greysful Glamour looked in her element at the top of the straight.
Criaderas looked done and dusted back to last at that stage, spotting the leader some six lengths.
At the 200m Greysful Glamour was full of running, but out of nowhere Criaderas and the fellow James Cummings-trained Best Of Days came flying home out wide from the back in a Royal Blue challenge.
Greysful Glamour held off the late charge to salute in the Villiers, while Best Of Days ran second in a photo for the minor placings and Criaderas finished off the trifecta in an absolute star performance.
It was back-to-back wins the Villiers Stakes champion following the mare’s lead-up victory in Rosehill’s Listed ATC Cup (2000m) from November 28.
That day she won by 2.5 lengths over the extra distance, and after a freshen-up, she was excellent in the Villiers back down to 1600m saluting at Randwick for the first time after 10 previous attempts at the course.
“She’s an all-time favourite,” Newnham said.
“She ran a place in the Oaks in Melbourne for our first Melbourne Carnival runner so…it’s a good win all round.
“She’s a really exciting mare to watch and she’s the sweetest, loveliest filly you ever see in the stable.
“It was good to get a really nice win today.
“She’s absolutely thriving in work at the moment and she loves her job.”
She got conditions to suit in the quarter-of-a-million-dollar clash with Randwick racing as a Good (4), and Newnham said they would be guided by the weather as to her upcoming autumn plans.
Greysful Glamour also made history with 2020 the quickest ever Villiers, the mare saluting in 1:33.47 over the mile to beat Happy Clapper’s previous race record of 1:33.98.
With the Villiers performance, Greysful Glamour earned herself a ballot free ride into the Group 1 $3 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) at the same track and distance on Easter Saturday, April 3.
“You get a lot of rain (in Sydney) in the autumn…we’ll just let the dust settle after that and see where we go,” Newnham said.
With the team yet to confirm her 2021 Doncaster Mile bid, Greysful Glamour is listed at $26 in all-in betting on ‘The Championships’ Day 1 classic through Ladbrokes.com.au.
