A recent addition to the Tony Gollan stable, quality mare Krone was back to winning form at the Sunshine Coast on Saturday earning a Magic Millions target next summer with her eye-catching win in the 2020 Glasshouse Handicap.
Formerly prepared in Melbourne by Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr, the always-honest Eurozone four-year-old had her fifth start for Eagle Farm horseman Gollan in the Listed $85,000 Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on Winx Guineas Day.
Best known for her Listed Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) win in the wet at Rosehill in March last year when defeating subsequent Group 2 winner and The Everest performer Classique Legend (3rd), Krone celebrated her first victory since in the Glasshouse.
A genuine wet-tracker, she relished the Heavy track conditions at Caloundra and was flying in the going with 54kg on her back in the form of jockey Taylor Marshall.
Coming back from 57kg at Doomben when she ran a brave second to Sure Knee a fortnight ago on a Good (4) track in the Group 3 Sapphire Stakes (1630m), Krone travelled nicely throughout settled fourth in a race lacking pace.
It was 150/1 shot from Miles Silent Flyer up front leading from Special Missile with the easing favourite Soxagon a bit keen up in third, while Krone was on his inside fourth the fence.
Once on the straight Silent Flyer was quickly tackled by the classier horses in the race including Krone who broke clear dashing away over the final furlong.
Despite getting a little weary late, the mare went on to defeat the Richard & Michael Freedman-trained Special Missile, while the market mover River Racer put in a huge effort to run third from the back with the moderate tempo against him.
“She’s been busting to win a race since we had her this preparation,” Gollan told Sky Thoroughbred Central.
“She’s a very good wet tracker. She’s been such a consistent mare her whole career.
“She’s a really honest mare that has been plagued by a lot of bad barriers throughout her career.
“She really did win quite well in the end.
“We’re thrilled with Roll The Dice to give us the opportunity to race a horse like this.”
Gollan confirmed Krone, originally set for the broodmare sales, would be withdrawn and raced for another year.
For now, she heads to the paddock for a well-deserved rest ahead of the Magic Millions Carnival next January targeting the $1 million Magic Millions Fillies & Mares (1300m) event on the Gold Coast.
