2020 Ken Russell Memorial Classic Field & Betting: Wisdom Of Water Odds-On

Toby & Trent Edmonds’ flying local colt Wisdom Of Water is the red hot favourite at an odds-on quote in Ken Russell Memorial Classic 2020 betting for this weekend at the Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast Guineas Race Day takes place in Queensland on Saturday featuring a triple shot of Black-Type racing action including the two-year-olds doing battle in the Group 3 $125,000 Ken Russell Memorial Classic (1200m).

The set weights clash serves as a key lead-up into this season’s Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) over the mile at Eagle Farm on June 6 as part of a reduced Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up and shapes up as a hotly contested race.

Wisdom Of Water is one of the 2020 J.J. Atkins-bound juveniles in the 12-start Ken Russell Memorial Classic field on the weekend, the classy Headwater colt currently paying $7.50 as the all-in second favourite for the Group 1 through Ladbrokes.com.au.

He won’t be found at that price for the lead-up run on the weekend however sitting top of the Ken Russell Memorial Classic odds at $1.70.

Drawn a treat in barrier two with Robbie Fradd retaining the ride, the up-and-comer chases back-to-back wins at the track and distance having saluted by a runaway 5.5 lengths over the 1200m at the Gold Coast fresh on May 1.

He comes back a kilo to 57kg and presents fit second-up on Saturday, Wisdom Of Water also boasting form around the brilliant filly Away Game when fourth only 2.4 lengths off her in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic back in January.

With Wisdom Of Water such a dominant favourite, the next best in Ken Russell Memorial Classic betting this Queensland Winter Racing Carnival is the Chris Waller-trained Saffiano at $5.50.

Jumping from a nice midfield barrier five draw with Ryan Maloney in the saddle, Waller’s lightly-raced More Than Ready colt comes off a breakthrough win at Rosehill on ANZAC Day.

After a fifth on debut at Randwick’s Kensington track just 10 days before, Saffiano showed nice improvement relishing a step-up to 1400m for a eye-catching win in the $100,000 Clarendon Stakes carrying 55.5kg.

He races at the Gold Coast track fit third-up on the weekend, but will need to be at his best coming back in distance and going up in weight.

A further three potential J.J. Atkins horses are under $10 in Ken Russell betting for the weekend including the in-form Minjee ($8) chasing a third straight win for ace Brisbane horseman Robert Heathcote.

Michael Cahill rides the progressive Not A Single Doubt filly from barrier seven on the weekend having ridden her to victory two back over the distance at Doomben for a win on March 28.

Minjee then made it back-to-back wins when apprentice Stephanie Thornton was aboard for another 1200m Doomben victory on April 11, the filly now looking to extend her winning streak in her Gold Coast debut in tougher company.

The other Waller runner in the mix, Press Statement colt Spokesman ($9.50) drawn well in gate four also looking for a third consecutive win, and the Kacy Fogden-trained last start 1400m Gold Coast winner Neutron ($9.50) in the outside alley (12) then round out the single-figure fancies.
